what do people mean when they say"check your pm's"

Private mail, as in e-mail. Rather than posting a reply in a public forum
they are responding to that person's e-mail

"PM" = Private Messages. Take a look near the top right of the page, you'll see a boxn that says Welcome, UserName, and under that, it says if you have any Private Messages or not.
