• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey guys and gals. First post here on your great site. I am kinda new to this whole scanning thing. I was wondering if I could ask a couple questions. I used to listen to the scanner a little bit but the other day it stopped working. So I did a "little" research on the matter and came up with this page for new frequencies in my area. Now the question I have is....Can I pick up these frequencies with my current scanner(Radioshack Pro 2048) or do I have to get a trunked model like the radioshack pro 2052 or do I have to buy a digital scanner? If so I was looking at the Uniden BC785D which they say is APCO-25 ready. But I was reading in another thread you had going about 3500 baud and 9500 baud. I have no idea what that means. I really have no idea what I am trying to say here. All I know is that I want to get my police scanner working again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!!

Hello sly-dawg,

Unfortunately, you cannot monitor the system listed from the link you provided with the present scanner you use. The system is a 3600 Baud //otorola ASTRO Smartzone Trunked Radio System. It uses APCO-CAI digital audio.

To monitor this system, you will have to purchase one of these 3 scanners:

1.Uniden BC250D Handheld w/APCO 25 Card.
2.Uniden BC785D Base/Mobile w/APCO 25 Card.
3.RatShack/GRE PRO 96 Digital Handheld.

The Uniden scanner will cost about $625 w/APCO 25 Card. The RatShack/GRE scanner will cost $499.99. There are rumors that the PRO 96 and BC250/785D scanners will be on sale for X-Mas.These are the only radios that will work with the system you want to monitor.

Thank you very much for such a quick reply. I guess I'll wait til x-mas to get one then. No need to spend 600 dollars for a scanner right now. I'll pass on this info to my mother in law too. She is a big fan of listening to the police frequencies in our area. I still can't believe how much these things cost. WOW!

Thanks again for the fast reply!!
