• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued.     To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Just wondering...what would it take to set up an EDACS trunking system, kinda just for kicks. I dont know if "small" is really even possible, but if so, then....something small, to say "Gee whiz" to. Is it something you can do with things off of eBay, or is each system custom-designed?

I'm a Motorola guy, but from what I understand the EDACS systems are very similar.
A "small" system is possible, if you're talking about the number of repeaters. It could be as low as two (ok, technically "one" in a properly configured Motorola Startsite system, but I'm not sure if there's an EDACs equivalent).
If you're talking about small in bugetary terms, then no. From what I've heard, the EDACs stuff is similar in pricing to the Motorola stuff, or even more. Without going into real numbers, we're talking many, many, many thousands of dollars...even if you buy used.
And yes, each system is custom designed.

That would be an EDACS 'SCAT' system would it not?

No. SCAT is synonymous with VOC. StartSite is a system type like PrivacyPlus, SmartNet, SmartZone, etc. It's a real bare-bones system.

If there was only one repeater in a StartSite system, then it does not do VOC? Or is it PTT trunking then?

You can't do VOC unless it's a SmartZone network. I wouldn't think Moto would recommend a Startsite with less than 3-4 channels. Also, PTT-ID is reserved for APCO-16 compliant applications.

Actually yes, that would be a SCAT. Single Channel Autonomous Trunking. It is atually considered a site and I have one which I use as a test bed and it works GREAT.
