I do tell you when GRE was making this same brand and model radio it was a great unit. The digital decode was the best out there hands down. Excited to see them ship in the first week of September. Hopefully the WS-1095 model will be here for Christmas time. They are keeping a tight lip so far and not throwing a bunch of BS around town which is a good thing. I think I will have to add one to my stable soon. Plus I think the price is going to be right where it should be for a Phase I FDMA scanner. Also, the butel GRE-600 software will be compatible for programming.

Which is the best portable scanner for P 25 Phase II? My sheriff office just put a new system online. I had a Uniden portable and sent it back due to so many complaints about it on here. I understand that the Whistler portable digital scanner uses technology that is older than the Uniden. I am not a scanner expert on the new technology, so I'd appreciate any suggestions?

I hate to say this, but my opinion is the 436HP (I don't own a 536HP) has the best digital decode on Phase ll. I use the 436 and the GRE PSR-800.

Still no mention of the radio in the OP but this was on their FB page today.

You are really going to get varied opinions on this question.000

The GRE PSR800 and or Whistler (whatever the new model number is) and or the Uniden are about the same..............user preferences are going to drive answers as to what is best

I have a 800 and a friend has a Uniden 436HP and we can put them side by side and depending on the way the Gods are looking at them one can do better today and the other will do better tomorrow.

I have 2 800s that are set up exactly alike.............one normally stays on my desk in "base mode" and one is usually in the car in "mobile mode" The one in base mode usually does REAL good decoding digital and captures probably 90% of the time

I still use my 800 in my "work car" when doing prisoner transports because it is so easy to program where ever I am going (I have MOST of the state of Iowa programed into my 800)

When I am mobile it REALLY depends on location................

In reality is is 6 of one, half dozen of the other as to what is best--------bottom line is a scanner isn't a $6000 commercial radio designed to work on the system

I wouldn't get rid of something because people complained about it on a forum. I'd get rid of it if I didn't like it. I use the BCD436HP among others to listen to the P25p1 KSICS, it's just as good as other systems - if not better. I'm comparing based of my experiences with a 996XT, PSR800, Pro197, USB dongles with Unitrunker & DSD+ etc. I wouldn't get the 536 only because of the absence of promised features at this time.

I went to a local RS (Yesterday) and saw a few boxes on display as I see on the box the radio says Radio Shack. I don't know if you open the box and the radio will say Whistler or Radio Shack I didn't ask to see the unit itself. I may wait til I go to the mall and see what it will say. I saw the prices around 399.99. I saw both boxes of the WS1040 / WS1065

Whistler communication

It seems to be missing big time. I know starting over isn't easy but you would think that with all the interest on new scanners that Whistler would want to join in here like UP man does and be able to supply information and such .They cannot run on auto much longer as consumers want to buy what they had before GRE CLOSED shop. Is reverse engineering this difficult and manufacturing so hard to get started that it takes this long to get off the ground? Must be. Seems the old GRE 800 Trunking is what a lot of people want, so why concentrate on a generic model limited to basic scanning when that format is leaving. Come on WHISTLER, get a Public Info officer to join here and answer questions!!, Please!!

I can't tell for sure but it looks like the 1080 in the picture has a Radio Shack 800 MHz antenna on it. The PSR800 had a stubby antenna on it.

I agree that the one he is holding is an RS 800 antenna but the one sitting on the table on the left side looks to have the standard antenna. That white backlight is what drew my attention to it and confirmed what it was.

Just ordered the Whistler 1080 from Jeff at HamStation. Never did own the PSR-800. Will be very interested to do some head-to-head comparisons with my 436HP on all the different systems in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. So far I have been happy with 536HP/436HP, except of course, for the well known delay of some features. But I am a fair guy, and I really want to see what the new Whistlers can do. Will be anxious to try the new 1095 when that is available.

Make sure you buy a lot of batteries for that 1080. In the past these units chewed up batteries. Wonder if Whistler fixed that issues??
