Hi Everyone,

While running discovery on 400-500mhz, I encounter white noise on some frequencies (sometimes there and sometimes not). What exactly is this white noise? I was just curious as to why it breaks squelch as my squelch is set to 2. Is the white noise a signal?

I also get weird sounding audio patterns, I assume this is encoded audio is that correct? Or is it something else?

If it's white noise then it's probably encryption at the audio signal. If it is more like high frequency tones in a melodic pattern it's probably a digital signal that may or may not be encrypted. If you haven't got the DMR and NXDN options installed it might be one of those digital modes.

Sometimes the squelch also opens up on interferencies at other nearby frequencies. If you set the scanner to record and post the audio file, 5 sec are enough of each example, it would be pretty easy for a long time scanner listener to determine what it is that you hear.
