I joined just a short time ago, but have become really active in my search of information.
I am not sure if this matters to other people who search/use this site. And if it has been done, please someone direct me to it. Is there a thread or folder that breaks down who makes what scanners.
I know the Uniden and Radio Shack (made by Uniden and GRE) are the two most common names for the general public. But I for one like to know who makes what.

I know that the site Strong signals has a list, but it has not been updated in a couple of years to include the current models.
There is also a FCC site that you can go and find out each model.
Does anyone have a folder or thread on this site?

This info can be retrieved by clicking on Wiki on the top menu bar. Look for Radio Model Information

not quite

I checked the Link Frank. They offer info on most current models, but not for everything.
Maybe it isn't out there.

If I can obtain the latest info, maybe it is something I can post if the owner would like it.

And too, maybe it isnt important to most

Well as you stated Uniden makes Uniden, but Radio Shack has had models made by a few manufacturers over the years (including current GRE and Uniden models). Mostly it is just "gee-whiz" information unless you are looking for a schematic or something.

I was unclear (from you posts) if you were looking for the information because you had a question on a particular model or if you just were interested. If you are seeking info on a particular model, just ask; someone will have the answer.

reasons

Lou
I have two reasons for wanting this information.
I have been a casual listener for over 30 years. In that time I have owned many Electra/Bearcat/ Uniden models. I never bought the top of the line as my area that I live has always been pretty basic with fire and rescue freq's. I have had the Electra III and IV. the Bearcat 210, 210xlt, Beatcat 211, Bearcat 220. A uniden 560 and the 248. Two handhelds the Bc60xlt and the BC 100.
Overall in the beginning I had great sucess with my BC's. I never would consider a Radio Shack Scanner, feeling it was a lesser quality.
Since I have become interested in scanning again, and thanks to the internet, I have done a lot of research on brands and reliablity. I have become a fan of the RS scanners only through my readings. (I recently won a pro-43 on ebay and am very satisfied). The raves that the pro-2006 receives from everyone who posts about it, is what I always felt about my ole 210 ( I really know little about it).
I recently wen to my local RS store only to hve the sales rep (who claimed to be the store expert) tell me that all Radio Shack scanners are made by Uniden. I knew better and have since been on a mission to get this salesman a list so he does not look like a jerk.
So thats my story, I hope it makes sense.

Mark,
I understood the above reason, but couldn't get the second one out of the rest of your post.

Don't bother helping the guy out. My son is a RS manager and although there are some pretty knowlegable scanner heads working for the shack, by and large the employees are mostly temporary, waiting for another job to come along or are experts in whatever RS is pushing at the moment (most likely a phone).

As for who makes what, the easiest way to tell is to look at the FCC ID Number on the data plate for the radio. If it starts with "AMW" it was made by Uniden; "ADV" is GRE; and "AAO" is Radio Shack (but it probably was made in someone else's factory anyway.) Hope that helps out.

trying to reason

Lou
I am not sure I understood the second part of my post :O)

Bottom line on that is that When and if I upgrade to a top of the line scanner. I would want one made by GRE and that will no be outdated either by rebanding or anything else a month after I but it.

Hope that is a little clearer

HA!

Well, perhaps you should wait. There has been plenty of discussion of this in the Scanning Forum so I won't rehash it, but at this point it appears as if RS has basically acknowledged that probably only the Pro-96/2096 will survive the rebanding. You can also take a look at the post by Paul Opitz in the Uniden Foum (both of those are stickies) to see how Uniden is planning on handling the rebanding and on what scanners.

For Mark,

I've updated Wiki Radio Shack scanners to reflect the source manufacture of each scanner, except Pro-2051 and Pro-83, which I don't know the source for. But I would wager they are both by Uniden because neither have Win-xx(xx) software, at this time anyway. Thanks to Lou, I've learned a new method.

For Lou,

Guess you've settled into your new location ok, we've missed your comments.

Yes they are Uniden

Frank;
Thank so much for doing that. And you are right, the pro2051 and 83 are both made by Uniden.

I would be happy to help you with this when I get a little more experienced at the forum stuff.. If the moderators would like..

Thanks again

complete list

I got a complete list that was on Strong signals of many older model scanners dating back over 20 years. Would that be something that could/should be added to the database?

thanks

Of course you can, simply click on the brand name on the Wiki Main page and list the model, then edit in the data/info. If you can find a picture, list it also.
However, the 83 has nothing listed (blank when opened) Apparently whom ever listed the link failed to follow through with anything.

Frank:
Yep, have gotten settled in(mostly) and have even gotten the computer back up (after the hard drive took a dive). Am slowly getting back into hobby stuff...

Mark:
As Frank says, if you have something to add in the Wiki, please do so. As for the blank page, the Wiki has several of them, mostly as "seeds" in hopes that someone will fill them in. :D

Hi all,

"...and have since been on a mission to get this salesman a list so he does not look like a jerk."

"To dream the impossible dream..."

Sorry guy, Don Quixote had better luck. (;->)
