I updated a previously 4.06 dongle via the latest version of Sentinel and the Wifi Information says its still 4.06. I can ping the IP address of the scanner but I can not get it to stream to VLC.

Am I missing a step? I never went to version 5.01 and my Version is still 4.06 despite a firmware upgrade.

^ If you are running into this your microSD card is shot and won't allow writes to the disk. I kept trying to manually format it, write the files to it, etc. and it simply was stick in read only mode. So I threw another one in and it upgraded cleanly. I may be streaming in a moment...

VLC url

How did you figure out the exact url for VLC?

I found it in wifi setup menu on scanner but added the rtsp and au:scanner.au stuff. So the scanner will give you the numbers to fill in like I have here. All of this should be in the box for VLC. Then click play.
rtsp://192.168.1.21/au:scanner.au

scanner menu/wifisetup/wifi information/ ip: ___.___._._ those numbers.

My wifi dongle will not connect when plugged in to the PC. I get the message USB Device Not Recognized..... When plugged in to the 536 menu says wifi not connected. Have no idea what any firmware is except the 536. It has 1.05.01. Scanner works fine otherwise. Just dongle is dead. Green light does work

Need the drivers installed on your PC before its plug in
Says,,,,, Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date....The best driver for your device is already installed...This was checked after the device was plugged in. don't know how to install drivers before its plugged in

when did you do your update??

Added: I was thinking it may be a late night update but did not work for me so maybe not.

Friday, I thought the newest firmware (if you could get it to work) was 7.28?? Now I am really confused

I've just stumbled on something which may or may not be useful.

If you have several 536 scanners, it appears you cannot simply interchange dongles. In other words if scanner A is configured for dongle 1, you can't connect a different dongle to scanner A. If you do, you see a message "wifi is busy" or something like that. To get the other dongle working, you have to do a "Reset to Factory" and set the connection for the different dongle.

And of course if you do that, then if you use the RH 536, you have to update that with the new IP address assigned to that different dongle.

Odd, I had a bricked dongle Firmware version 0.00 so I got another dongle which was 7.28 and it worked just fine w/o doing anything other than connect it to the scanner. Of course, I connected it with the scanner turned off. Sitting here trying out the RH-536HP tool. But alas, the VLC player does disconnect after a while of listening.

I am sure glad some people are extremely happy around here.

I am still trying to rap my mind around why alot of our wifi bricks have a firmware version of 0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0

Does this mean when they left the factory somebody forgot to plug these dongles into the firmware machine and at least give it a hand shake?

Quality Control............... What a disaster.

Uniden should have been working around the clock to stop this black cloud circling the drain.

If you are saying that you never updated the dongle and it is showing version 0.00 then you might have a unique situation such as a defective dongle or you have something else going on entirely.

Your dongle should only read version 0.00 if it was at version 5.01 AND you attempted the update released Friday via the newest version of the Sentinel app.

This has nothing to do with dongle QC when they left the factory... it is just a bad update.

Installed on my computer and Iphone

Update went without a hitch, Installed on my PC and I also installed the app, Media Player Streaming Video Free by Farida Haddad on my IPhone.

Now I can listen to my scanner and streaming with my IPhone anywhere in range of my router.

After a year, finally progress.

Really very frustrated at this point. Update for dongles (all three) went fine and all say 7.28. The 536s are at FW 1.05.01. My three 536HPs clearly see my router and show my five letter router name (ABCDE : example only, not real name) Connect immediately in access mode.
Go to infrastructure mode, clearly sees router again ABCDE, asks for password, enter my 10 letter number WEP password (9999ABCD88: example only), the same I use for all of my Wi-Fi devices. And keeps coming up connection error. Began to wonder if router problem, so I disconnected Wi-Fi connections to my and wife's IPhones and IPADs (4 devices). Again looked for Wi-Fi, my router XXXXX immediatly appeared, entered my password 9999ABCD88, and my IPAD and IPhone immediately connect and can be seen by the router when open that up.
I presume that the password being asked for in the Instrastructure mode for 536HP is the same as I use for my IPhone, IPAD, and all wireless laptops. So what am I doing wrong? Really frustrated as I would like to try and use the VLC and RH programs. I don't presume can use those in access mode.
Any further advice appreciated. Thank you.
Steve

Does the dongle support WEP encryption? WEP is long dead as a standard as it can be hacked very easily in mere seconds.

Most routers now use WPA at a minimum with WPA2 the preferred encryption. Just a thought as most things are backwards compatible with WEP or even no password and I would think the dongle would still support WEP but maybe not.

You also need to make sure your DHCP server has available IP address's to hand out and you have not used up all available. That's usually a function of your router as well.

The 5.01 and 7.28 updates were are referring to are for the dongle itself not the scanner. If you don't intend to use the dongle, than you can disregard the entire discussion.

Roveer

The updates are for BOTH.
5.01 is for the scanner and 7.28 is for the dongle.

The 5.01 scanner firmware fixes or adds the below.

BCD536HP v1.05.01 Revision Notes This firmware version includes the following updates, enhancements, and bug fixes:
  • Supports Remote-Control over Wi-Fi
  • Allows updating of the Wi-Fi unit firmware directly through the scanner.
  • When Close Call hit is found, no longer prompts to press any key.
  • Fixed the issue that the SD-Card file system is broken when connected to a Macintosh computer

So yes, one should at least update Sentinel as well as the scanners firmware.

Don't use windows drivers. Use the one from Unidens page. You will need to un-install the window drivers first. Or click update and manually path it to the saved Uniden driver

My wireless network runs on WPA2 and I had my scanner connected just fine pre-upgrade.

As for DHCP server, you have a good point, but what may be even better is if you have the ability to assign a static IP over DHCP. My Asus router allows this; when a device with a recognized MAC address requests a DHCP assignment, it will always deliver the same IP address to that device. I have my Chromecasts set up that way; one is always given .101 and the other .102. I plan to set up my scanner the same way once I get my dongle working.

The updates are for BOTH.
5.01 is for the scanner and 7.28 is for the dongle.

You're confusing scanner firmware 1.05.01 with dongle firmware 5.01. The instructions on the 536 wiki on Uniden's site, prior to last week, involved downloading a firmware updater and update file for your dongle. This, when applied, elevated your dongle from whatever the factory firmware was (4.60?) to 5.01. The 7.28 firmware is the version released this past week.

I have noticed that the RTSP will sometimes totally miss a transmission, sitting here with 5 radios running all on the same trunk system I can turn the audio back up on my 536 and I hear more then I hear on the computer.

Also I did have to reset my wifi to factory on the scanner before I could stream for some reason (I am a 5.01 firmware problem unit)

additionally I had to turn off wireless client isolation (a high er security thing) that my network equipment runs.

and additional issue I see with the wifi stream is that the auto gain control may be the issue why I was missing some things, it got SUPER loud with no warning

update:
the failures and missed transmissions are regular like 1 of every 30 or so transmissions, its almost like the stream fails and when a new stream is written it will try again and work the next time

update2: check out the screenshot, the mute is on but the radio is RX data via the local speaker the stream is silent - so the mute/auto gain control isnt working IMO this is a bug
