the wire length is not that critical. anything over about 20 feet (or 7 meters) should allow you to hear some signals. The longer the antenna wire the better it will work as you tune lower in frequency. To a large extent, the noise level at your location will determine how much you can receive. remember when setting gain that the signal to noise ratio is more important than signal level.
