I have a WS1080, technically a PSR-800 with the DMR upgrade from Whistler, making it a 1080 effectively.

Anyway, I've owned it since the PSR-800 was released and never really had any problems, either with the old NJ trunked system or the new. But, I'm having a weird issue now.

Despite having visual line-of-sight to the tower (it's on top of a mountain in my town), it takes the scanner 10-15 minutes to "find" the tower, or it seems that way.

Example: if I'm wanting to monitor the Passaic County sheriff, I have a scan set with just those talk group frequencies. I'll monitor just that. I don't hear anything and then suddenly I can hear them. Same with Troop B of the NJSP.

Is the scanner running through all the sites of the NJICS all the time until it finds the strongest frequency? How does that actually work in practice?

I'm not sure if this makes any sense. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

If you imported every site in the system instead of just the Passaic Simulcast (Site 17), then yes, probably. Horribly inefficient. Remove any sites that you won't be monitoring, or at least put them in a separate scan list from the Passaic cell, which is going to be your "home" site.

Do you mean scan list? A scan set contains scan lists. Does the scan set or sets that are enabled include the scan list for the sheriff? Talkgroups do not have frequencies. They have talkgroup ID's (TGID's). The frequencies are in the sites of a trunked system such as NJICS. You can also have scan lists containing conventional frequencies. The Passaic County Simulcast site uses both 700 and 800 MHz frequencies. The trunking tables for the site must be set to Auto Fill. I agree that if you are scanning every site in the system, it can take a long time to find your local site's control channel. Use only the Passaic County Simulcast site. I noticed that the Ramapo site is struck through. Perhaps, GTR8000 can elaborate on that. If you are experiencing simulcast distortion, it can take a long time to find a control channel. Usually, the audio will be garbled or drop out if that is the case. Do the sheriff and state police sound OK when you are able to receive them?

The Ramapo site is no longer Site 22 using those frequencies, it is now part of the Passaic cell, therefore the old ASR (standalone site) has been set to deprecated status in the RRDB. Clicking on the site name will reveal that.

Maybe simulcast distortion. I had a TRX 1 and TRX2 and they were terribly effected by SD. They were def most of the time and then maybe get a part of a conversation. I sold both of them and got a Uniden SDS100 and all my problems went away.
