SIRN Sites

This is a request that I make periodically for those of you within the areas below to check and see if one of these licensed sites has come online yet.

If you live in/near one of these areas, please check the frequencies occasionally to determine if/when a new site comes online.

There is a new [pending] FCC application for White Sulfur Springs (Greenbrier) -- 9227 below.

91xx sites are Zone 1 sites, and if online, their Zone/RFSS will be 1 and their Site ID will be the last two digits.

92xx sites are Zone 2 sites, and if online their Zone/RFSS will be 2 and their Site ID will be the last two digits.

99xx sites are sites for which I am unsure what zone they will be in once they are online. They Zone/RFSS will either be 1 or 2 and the Site ID will be the last two digits.

EX: If Pennsboro were online, it's RFSS/Zone would be 1 and it's Site ID would be 015. [1-015]

I have been reading through the beginning of this thread(again!) and amazed at how the SIRN has grown in the last 7 years and also the dedication of the posters here in finding their way(and finding new talkgroups)around it. Makes me happy to be a part of it :)

Bridge Day....

I have had my scanner with me most of the day just being on the computer and looking to see if the wildcard light lights up(I have blue for this) and have had a few new ones already. I also have been recording the audio of most I think I might want to listen to after I get my hearing problem cleared up(hopefully). The most interesting one for me today has been 5295,which I think is Fayette County and has been quite active. Can't wait to hear what agency this is. I probably will catch more tomorrow and I might venture out on the bridge and take a few pics with my Nikon D200...

Edit:If any of you catch 5295,lemme know WHO you think it might be(My son heard talk of tickets when I put it on the scanner speaker)

Hey MCWVlistener, Welcome to RadioReference and to the West Virginia Discussion Forum. I see that You are in this area. If You confirm any new Talk Groups You should submit them. Just make sure You confirm what agency it is.

WVSIRN - Pending FCC License Applications

Folks,

There is a slew of pending FCC apps for various WVSIRN sites. A few applications are for adding additional frequencies to existing sites, and many applications are for frequencies for sites that we do not currently have listed as operational.

Because the applications are still pending, I'm not going to post the details here. Once I see that the application{s} have been granted, I'll post the info. One interesting thing here is that most if not all of the applications include non public safety frequencies. For the most part, all existing SIRN sites [with the exception of a few] use frequencies in the 453 mhz and 460 mhz public safety bands. But WVSIRN has run out of available public safety freqs to use, so they are submitting apps to use other freqs on the system. These apps probably won't be instantly granted. Typically they get rejected, modified and resubmitted until they are approved by the FCC.

At any rate, the apps are for the following sites:

  • 1-036 Weston
  • 2-016 Huntington
  • Beckley (new site, which will likely be site 2-031)
  • Glenville (new site)
  • Grantsville (new site, which likely be site 1-016)
  • Ferrellsburg / Harts (new site, which will likely be site 2-018)
  • Pennsboro (new site, which will likely be site 1-015)
  • Sand Springs (new site, which will likely be site 1-031)
  • Spencer (new site)
  • Cameron (new site)
  • Panther / Iaeger (new site, which will likely be site 2-031)
  • Mannington (new site, which will likely be site 1-018)

Here is a nice aerial view of the Sand Springs Lookout Tower site. Of interest is the fact that neither of the two nice towers in the picture are FCC licensed tower structures. Hmmf. Bing Maps - Driving Directions, Traffic and Road Conditions

As far as the Cameron (Marshall Co I think) site, I have no idea if that site will ever make it live. There were some recent license modifications to the Ohio Co Simulcast portion of this system to include numerous additional sites in the simulcast (covering hancock, brooke, ohio, marshall counties on a single simulcast with lots of sites). So I don't know which is going to happen. Then again, 99% of the people reading this are not going to care what happens in Marshall Co since you're somewhere else.

The taller of the two towers is the West Virginia Public Broadcasting tower of WNPB-TV and public radio.
I forget the callsign and frequency. It is most certainly registered with faa and fcc. It is the tower that recently took a hit from a Beech King Air and lived.

You're right of course. When I wrote that, I knew the App Power tower was licensed as I was looking right at it. But then I did a proximity search for five miles around that site [to determine what other licensed towers were there] and nothing came up for some reason. I just did it now and everything popped up.
