The XHData D109WB is on sale today at Amazon for $43.52, which is quite a value. This was my first portable SW radio, and I got mine, along with a retractable wire antenna, from Amazon for less than $50.

I just want to say that after over a year of using this radio almost daily, it’s still my favorite radio and it’s still the one I use most. I’ve since gotten 3-4 (?) more portable radios, all but one of which cost more than the D109WB. All are excellent, highly rated, positively reviewed receivers, yet none has displaced my 109.

At $43.52 it’s a STEAL, and I encourage people to jump on it.

I got one in late February or some time in March. Great SWBC radio, very good Weather Band reception, and it's awesome on MW -- especially if you use headphones (for the fidelity) and a loop (to add to the signal strengths if you live in a hole like I do).

On MW the bandwidth choices are exemplary. Sometimes using headphones with the D109WB on MW it's like listening to a Superadio, the audio is that good.

Good on batteries, too.

On SW it will overload on some signals (if you clip on an external wire, as I do) -- you just switch in the DX/Local attenuator and the overload is gone.

Takes a bit of getting used to the tuning knob, but there is a method to the apparent madness -- it will land on a 5 kHz or 10 kHz channel, you just got to get the hang of how far to turn the knob to get it there. Direct entry is instant.

Terrific radio. I haven't got an XHDATA that didn't give me great value for the money.

The XHData D109WB sounds like a great radio for the money. The performance of some of the low cost radios is truly impressive these days.

As a ham radio operator, however, I usually only buy HF radios that have SSB capability.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the XHData D109 is based on the Si4734 DSP chip, which doesn't directly support SSB.

For those who want to listen to hams and other utility stations, I think it's well worth it to pay a few dollars more and get a Tecsun PL-330, based on the Si4735 chip, which is a really good SSB radio in a small package. It even tunes in 10 Hz increments, which to a long-time SWL like myself, is amazing.

No, it doesn’t have SSB. But SSB usually costs at least double what the D109WB costs. And, for less than $50 you get a radio that is very sensitive on SW, does well on MW and FM, has weather band and NOAA alerts, is an plays micro-SD cards and is a Bluetooth speaker. It also has excellent sound, tied with the Qodosen DX-286 for my best sounding portable radio, possibly even a little better bass than the Qodosen.

You get a lot for your money ($37.99 today at Amazon with a coupon.

If you need SSB, today on Amazon the Tecsun PL-330 is $84.99, the XHData D-108 is $98 with a coupon- so both are well over 2x the price of the D-108WB.

About the only really good deal on SSB is on eBay where you can still find the Eton Elite Executive for around $55-65.

I've seen the XHDATA D-808 for about $98 with a D220 thrown in as a bundle -- two radios for $98. Individual price I've seen, for the D808 alone, usually is around $108 or so. Sometimes dropping during a sale. Mainly on Amazon.

Tecsun PL-330 is a great value for the money.
