Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the 4550. This is the only one I’ve owned so I’m not sure. When it’s just powered on receiving it feels slightly warm on the heat sink. Not hot just warm. Also tried turning off the back light but still slightly warm. Wondering if this is normal

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

That's what the heat sinks are for. To displace the heat build up. So naturally, they are going to be warm. If it's hot enough that you cant touch it, I would be concerned. My XPR and XTL stay on all day long and the heat sinks are always warm to the touch.
One thing you didn't mention is the environment where it is installed. Does it have ample airflow? Is it in an already heated or overly warm environment? Do you have ample size wire supplying power to it? Good ground?

Well it’s been on 24/7 and not getting hot just slightly warm. Checked with it thermometer it’s like 82 degrees
ok thanks that answers my question since you own sane radio. It’s in my house right now where it’s 70 degrees. And yes lots of airflow and good power. I checked with a ir thermometer and it’s 82 degrees. So not hot just slightly warmer than the room. I guessing it’s totally normal just wanted to hear from someone else who had one. Thanks

I will be installing an remote mount XPR-5550 in my car in the near future. If you keep the words right side up, the heat sink points down(????). Because of this the RF deck will be installed upside down, with the heat sink fans pointed up. Not sure why Motorola designed it this way, but it is what it is.
