To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Connecting XPR 4550 with remote head. Remote kit and mic are all brand new. Mic does not work when plugged into remote head (Receive works). Mic does work when plugged into radio with remote head interface installed but not on actual remote head. Is there a setting in CPS I need to look at? Thanks!

do you have two cables? the 4000 series needed a second cable for the mic that went from the brick to the control head

Good question. I have checked it twice and the ribbon connector seems to be seated completely. Does it need to be inserted in a certain way or will it work with either side "up"?

No cps changes need to be made. Did it work before you converted it to a remote head?

Great question. Yes, the radio worked flawlessly previous to connecting the remote kit. Also firmware is updated to R01.11.02. Remote kit calls for R01.04.00 so we should be good form there. Also remote mount control head is model number: PMLN5404. I believe that is the correct model number for XPR 4550.

If the microphone works plugged into the radio brain with the remote kit attached, but doesn't work when connected to the control head, it makes me wonder if there is a problem with the remote microphone cable between the brain and the head. I don't believe it is keyed one way, any chance you've tried flipping the mic cable between body and head unit? Check all pins on each end?

Ok. Checked the mic cable - all pins looked good. Flipped it around and inserted the cables with a firm push to ensure the connection was good. Plugged in the mic to the remote head and BOOM! It worked. Thanks for reminding to go back to the basics and re-check connections!! It is greatly appreciated and thanks to all who weighed in to help resolve this crazy problem.
