• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Good info, I've never had my hands on a high power deck - didn't know that. Thanks! Good to know that the always-reliable RS232 connection is still there, albeit at different connection points and pin #s.
There's the HKN6183 High Power CGAI to RS232 cable available, but I thought I'd suggest using J6 in that the OP already has a DB25
attached to this connector (Post #12) and could easily add a few more wires to facilitate a serial communications channel.

Truthfully, I am not convinced that his existing GCAI USB cable won't work to upgrade the firmware but would want to query the radio using
a simple terminal program to probe around in the radio.

HLN6901D != HLN6885B.

There could be an issue with the antique firmware not liking that TIB you have. The DSM does list HLN6901(x) as an option, but it may have been a late in life change on the unit, so it would need later firmware to support it.

Just my opinion, what you have clearly isn't working for programming. Have you tried depot to the J2 via serial yet?
Actually, programming is not a problem, but I tend to agree this firmware is not ideal for this hardware.
That is why I am trying to update and that so far has failed.
The OP’s radio is a “High Power” model and does not have the normal J2 accessory connector.

@merlin, you might try adding a few additional wires to the DB25 that you've attached to the J6 connector on the TIB to provide
Serial RS-232 communications equivalent to that of the HKN6122 Data Cable per the wiring shown below.

I have what is needed to try this. In testing, the RS232 signals look good on J6. Maybe I can get Depot to connect here.
I had already thought of seeing what I can get with terminal commands. Just busy with this other stuff.
At least this front RS232 is the same as the J2 equivalent.
Some good things to try, Thanks.

Send me a PM if you still have issues with Depot once you connect up to the RS232 on J6. I might be able to assist.

OK, the J6 RS232 checks out and finally will connect with Depot. I do get this odd unexpected version error, but that should be easy to overcome.
The codeplug was built with CPS 20.01
My Depot version is 15.00.00 (all I had in my stockpile.)
