• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Can I use a USB to the mic connection on the control head or would I need a different one. Images attached below for both the cables I found.B133CC99-BD60-4A2B-BF19-61F063DFB496.jpeg07B7DA7B-1719-4486-AC69-7A52F0509F16.jpeg

I assume you mean XTL2500 mobile; if so, yes both cables pictured should work. The first cable works on the rear connector and the second works on the control head mic connection.

I’m using as a base station so it will be sitting on my desk.

Save some money and build yourself a cable. You already have the rear speaker/ign connector. Source the 4 pins needed and use any usb cable you have laying around. Strip. Crimp. Insert. Re-assemble rear connector. Enjoy!

Concur, it's pretty easy to build a programming cable for the rear accessory port. I had the pins in a drawer in the shop and was able to use a left-over ignition sense/speaker connector to whip one up; took about half an hour and saved me nearly $100.

If the OP has only the one radio, he can leave it connected to the radio and reprogram whenever the mood strikes him.

I'm new to Motorola mobile radios so if I can use the front port to program the radio that would probably be the best thing for me.

You can do that, but building your own cable would be more complicated; a standard microphone cable doesn't have all of the necessary connector pins, and soldering your own connector would be tricky, if you can even find just the connector.

If you make a rear accessory port USB programming cable, just make it long enough to reach out from behind the radio; leave it connected and simply plug in whenever you need to program the radio.

if you're determined to do it through the mike port, you would have to buy a cable on eBay, which will cost you anywhere from $30 to $50 or more.

I bought one from amazon. And yes that was probably a stupid move but if it doesn't work the ill try to do the rear accessory cable.
