• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a bunch of XTS series radios. I prefer the XTS5000 radio because of the channel capacity. In my XTS5000s I have approx 800 plus channels programmed in 44 zones, and 4 scan lists, with 13 conventional personalties.

I've had both and definitely like the form factor of the 2500 better. IMO the 5000 is too much of a brick and I've even has 5000 batteries get stuck. The battery latches just aren't their strong suit

Having both 5000 and 2500 each with its own genuine slim battery, 9862 and 9013. The 5000 is my "home" radio and the 2500 is the "travel" radio. I like the build of the 5000 but with both slim batteries being almost same thickness, the height is a inch or so difference I know the 5000 is built better and it just feels better. Although the slim batteries transformed the feel of them both. Real world, I've used my 5000 in the past 2 weeks and haven't turned on the 2500, its more a backup if I'm in between charged batteries.

The 5000s are way more serviceable/hackable. RF boards, VOCONs, UCMs can be swapped around as can housings with little effort. The 2500 was a Kroger Cost Cutter Astro 25 radio for those who could/would not "afford" a 5K. Case in point was the UCM being mounted to the rear of the keypad. Stupid design but shows hardware crypto was an afterthought.

When 5000s were our frontline portables I got to the point where I could completely disassemble and reassemble a 5K within 5 minutes or less. Still can deal with one pretty quickly. The 2500s on the other hand were always....ALWAYS...a pain to work on. I will always prefer the 5K even though it is a larger form factor.

Everything said here, BUT, there is no 900 MHz 5000, so thats why I have the 2500. But with APX4K’s now doing 900 ham freq’s, it may be time to part ways.

Before the APX900 the 2500 form factor was my personal favorite for carrying a single band radio, especially with a short antenna it fits well in the leg pocket in my cargo pants/shorts. I have a 5000 and it sits the majority of the time unused, but it's all programmed and ready to go if needed.
