• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Shaun,

Just for purposes of discussion, What would be the result if one was to go into tuner and turn the softpots for power out all the way to 0?

The softpot values aren't set up so that 0= 0W, and 125 = 3W. (I don't know how high it goes, I'm just making an example here). The softpots will actually reset themselves and start over, once you hit a certain value.

Example:

Let's say softpot value 27 = full TX output power. Once you go to value 28, it restarts at minimal power again.

OK, now moving on to the theory of your question, unfortunately this concept would not work because the output power of the exciter is still too great to not allow for RF output. You'll still see at least a few hundred mW.

Even if you were able to set the TX output for NILL, the radio could still be easily killed because the inhibit packet from the system controller does not require an acknowledgement packet from the radio.

The best way to get around the "kill" command, is to set the concentric switch for TX INHIBIT in both positions, and program the radio with a valid radio ID which is active on the system. The administrator cannot kill your radio (easily) because the inhibit packet would also kill the legitimate system radio.

Just so we're clear here, I'm not suggesting anyone CLONE a radio ID on a TRS. I'm saying if you program your radio with a VALID ID (clone) and your TX Inhibit is permanently enabled, then your radio cannot be inhibited.

Some of the lower-end equipment such as the GTX and/or LTS2000/LCS2000 series can be programmed with a radio ID of 700000. I'm told that the controller cannot kill this radio ID because it's out of range. I have not confirmed this myself, but I believe it to be true.

The LTS2000/GTX/LCS2000 radios DO NOT have a transmit inhibit feature, so this "700000" trick is a good idea to use if you own one of those radios.

In all of these scenerios, DO NOT program your radio with "SMARTZONE" as the coverage type. Set the coverage type to DISABLED. Set your affiliation to "On PTT". DO NOT set it for "automatic".

Remember, if you don't belong on a trunked system, then you shouldn't be there. M is going all nazi as of late with their "stomp out the hacker" campaign.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that a radio, even though it can't transmit, will still inhibit when it sees the command regardless of whether it is able to ACK it or not. I take that with a grain of salt. Have you been able to test it Shaun?

Wayne, you're 100% correct. However if the RID is a VALID RID.. i.e. one that's in use on the system, the system administrator can't kill it because they'd also kill the legit radio. The sys admin would not know there's a clone on the system if your radio never affiliates.. He'd have to reason to issue a kill for a valid RID unless he knew/suspected there was a clone. (Keep in mind the clone radio also has TX INHIBIT enabled)

I know someone who's using a radio programmed as I suggest, and they haven't been killed yet. The sys admin is killing all inactive ID's constantly.. like doing a poll or something.

Anyway, PM me if you want to talk about it further. I suspect Patrick L. Harrington is reading this thread. That guy is a goofball.
