To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Bought a VHF MIII XTS5000 on eBay, it arrived, new case, pretty, shiny, obviously an MII hacked up to an MIII with a weird flashcode. Opened it in CPS, I can't delete anything in the radio, the red X is greyed out for all personalities, zones, and channels. I can modify these, but I am stuck with the configuration the selelr sent it to me. It's not write protrected, and I can program new stuyff into the radio, I just can;t delete in CPS. Protected zones is also unchecked. I am at a loss here...any ideas short of hitting it with a new depot brain? Receives fine, FPP works from keypad.

Whorecode is 560001-001307-0.

With FPP there are always going to be 240 channels and 15 zones as a minimum. You're also limited to a maximum of 255 channels instead of the normal 870 or 1000.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to change it. This is why non-FPP radios are more desirable most of the time.

Negative. My FPP 2500 has 2 zones. one for FPP, & one non FPP. So 16 personalities for the FPP zone, & 3 for the non FPP zone. And while FPP is a great feature to have, I have yet to use it. They got FPP right on the APX.

My 5000 is an R20 radio if that makes a difference. I am working around the limitation, but it would be nice to be able to delete all the unused zones and such.

I have two XTS5000 radios with FPP. The one made into a model 3 is like Anderegg’s. It has boatloads of zone’s and personalities that do not go away. The other is like N4KVE‘s 2500, with the first 16 FPP and with only a few zone’s and fewer personalities as needed.

They both work fine. The difference is the larger zone/personality takes longer to write. CPS will appear to lock up and may say that it is not responding. I just leave it alone and it writes out the codeplug fine and displays the success message when complete.

I do not know why they are different. I am an amateur using a professional radio for fun. There are members of RR that administer radios professionally. My guess from limited research is not needed.

What are the flashcodes and firmwarez for each radio?

Flash for the one like yours is 5A9001-001306-7 and the firmware is R16.00.01. ( This one takes a while to read/write )

The other is 5E0081-001787-3 and the firmware is R20.50.07.

There's a fellow on eBay that will flash it to whatever you want for around $60. He fixed up a FPP XTS5000 for me not that long ago.

Thank you. I am unsure of what I would gain. I use P25 and analog for amateur and GMRS stuff and they work fine for that. I don't know what the latest firmware is for the XTS5000, nor if either radio can upgrade to it. They have the 8MB of Flashport memory and the Bravo processor. The radio with the R16 firmware was made in 2006. The R20 firmware radio was made in 2011.

I just can;t delete in CPS. Protected zones is also unchecked.

What Uncle Will said in the post above. Then in CPS, go to the last Zone and UN check FPP Enable in the FPP/Protection tab if you want to modify the Zone to remove FPP. You must do this in reverse order (Z15-14-13, etc.), CPS also will delete the personalities as you go. CPS will also re-launch the tree every time you delete a FPP Zone. I had a UHF XTS5000 that had many more than 255 channels in it, with a single FPP Zone, and about 18 additional zones with all kinds of stuff. FPP if needed, is handy, but if you move channels around a lot you lose a great deal of functionality in editing the channels (no moving chan 4 to chan 6 within a zone), but if you have to have it, it IS simple to scale it back.

Thank you very much. I followed your instructions and this works fine in CPS. After I'm done cleaning things up I'll save it as a new file and write to the radio. I presume this will work for Anderegg as well.

Hmm...I now have a different question. On my other radio, how can I enable FPP on more zones? The box is there, but I am unable to select it. The radio has that feature, Q52 or whatever it is and I can FPP the first zone.

Update: Write to radio is noticeably quicker, which I presumed/hoped would be the result. CPS no longer freezes up as either. Thanks

Thanks for that! I recall trying this before to no avail. I've been stuck with 14 unused FPP zones for the last several years.

No joy after all. Evidently, R09.00.41 on an AN XTS2500 is too old for this trick.

Well as long as it fits your needs then you are good to go. The FPP radios won't do FPP and trunking so I had it flashed to remove FPP from the radio.

True, as I do not need trunking. I did read that R09 allowed for FPP and trunking, but I cannot confirm.

My other XTS5K also has Q52 and Q53, but no go on enabling FPP on any zones. It's sort of weird as zone one cannot be enabled (checked), but I can still FPP zone one. FPP is of course in the conventional menu. Oh well, I'll reprogram and leave zone one open if I need to add frequencies on the fly and program the rest. I don't really need FPP for every channel and it's a quick CPS edit and write when changes are needed, or move FPP added items to other zones later. Having some FPP is better than none for my needs.

Correct. It wasn’t until after R09 that the trunking or FPP rule was enforced. I’ve got an XTS4K VHF that does both.
