• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

After turning on the radio does the LED on top turn green and go out? If not check the contacts on the battery connector where they make contact with the rf board. Sometimes they are pushed down into the grey plastic and don't make good contact. Also remember oil from your fingertips can cause issues with any of the contacts inside the radio. Rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth will help. Another thing is to make sure the front cover flex connector is seated properly into the circuit board. If you can measure the current draw when you turn on the radio, you should see around 80 mA.

I opened up the radio BECAUSE it stopped working. As far as the contact issue goes, I pulled them up pretty far to make sure they were contacting the circuit board. I'm getting power everywhere; it just won't seem to power up. The LED does not go on...NOTHING. It is very strange. Is it possibile it could have thought I was doing something bad to it and I was tampering with it and thus locked up in some sort of "safe mode"? Could it have something to do with the key I kept seeing before it failed?

I measured the current drain by voltage and it showed a drain of approximately 1 volt or less.

I did notice there was some sort of greasy white substance in the radio, could this be a problem?

Key Fail as posted earlier won't cause the radio to stop working. You can remove the secure module from the radio if you want to eliminate it as a possible short. After doing that and provided the radio powers up you will see a FL 09/10 message which means the radio is programmed for a secure module but the radio cannot see it. What happens if you push the PTT button and orange button at the same time while turning on the radio?

Nothing...still dead. I think it might have something to do with that circuit board underneath the metal cover. Was that the original problem with the radio?

How much would you want for a working one that's VHF (the board, that is)?

JUST IN CASE NO ONE READ THROUGH THIS THREAD, THIS RADIO IS VHF CONVENTIONAL, NOT 800.

FYI, trunking is not limited to 800MHz. There are heaps of systems all over the world on VHF, UHF, 800MHz and 900MHz.
