You can still find 7800's kicking around a few stores, though. RT systems just came out with the programming software for the 7900. It can be found here: RT Systems Radio Programming Software

Just got the 7900 software from RTS (actually I ordered cheaper on Universal Radio's site) Friday, haven't done any programming just yet. Software seems pretty simple to use.

Hmmm, I don't know about that, you can try this: Yaesu FT-7900R MARS/CAP Mod

Even if you were able to freeband this mobile rig, I sincerely would suggest against prolonged (or any for that matter) transmissions at or around the frequencies of 478MHz. This radio was designed, tuned, and tweaked for transmitting in the specified ham band and sure it could work slight above and below that but at 28MHz above the intended upper limit, you're asking for it. I'd find a cheap high-split commercial UHF radio instead, just a suggestion.

I'm looking at these radios on eBay and the sellers are claiming they transmit in the 137-174 range on VHF and 420-470 in the UHF band.

Is that correct? Last time I had a 2 meter rig it put out so few watts in the 150-174 range it couldn't hit local repeaters.

Is this an exception? What's the deal?

There is a mod which opens up the radio to transmitting outside of the amateur radio bands. However the radio is not FCC approved for that operation and legally you could be punished for its use.

Look twice before buying this radio

I am thinking of picking up the FT-7900 in the next couple weeks to replace my aging Alinco DR-112. If I do end up getting it I will put out free programming software for it, as there does not appear to be any.

I just took delivery of this radio. The deviation is terrible. You have to yell into the mike at close range. The intermods are very bad in any area with even a small amount of RF. I plan to return the radio in the next day or so.
