I am a new Ham. I just purchased the Yaesu FTM-500dr as my first rig. The rig arrived and set up seemed easy. I can receive on several frequency that I manually programed into the unit but I am unable to transmit on any frequency. I have been checking it against my handheld. Check the manual but can not find any issue. I also tried the Yaesu mic from the control head and the main body - still not able to transmit. Any suggestions? thanks in advance.

You are programming amateur radio frequencies? Please explain about checking against handheld. Could be desense? Have you confirmed with other amateurs. Are you trying simplex or through repeaters. If repeater do you have proper offset and frequency? If simplex are you sure offset is set to off? Are you using VFO or Memory? Is your coax and antenna old? Very had to diagnose problems without seeing what the VFO or memory looks like.

You probably should have chosen a less-complicated transceiver for a first-time unit. What's done is done so I suggest you get some radio programming assistance from RT Systems. Their programming programs are intuitive and practically fool-proof. Each program is designed for a particular radio. (I am not affiliated with the company.) In the meantime, answer the questions and follow the instructions from those trying to help you here and you'll do just fine.

In reference to the original question, for any operators out there who may be experiencing the no transmit issue as a new owner of the Yaesu FTM-500DR, make sure you have the microphone plug pushed and locked all the way into the connector, whether it be into the radio body or the radio head. It needs to be pushed in pretty far for it to lock. When I first fired mine up and tried to transmit, I had the same issue and then discovered that's all it was. Just wanted to share that for anyone that may have recently purchased the Yaesu FTM-500DR. KD3ZX 73 all.

The OP hasn't responded since his original post 4 months ago. He has either talked himself out of being a ham or he's waiting for more info (that doesn't appear to be waiting in the wings).

I'd like to think he managed to get it sorted out on his own. His licensed was issued 3/13/23, he upgraded to General on 4/3/23 and posted about the radio on 5/7/23, the day he joined the site. This doesn't sound like someone who is giving up on the hobby.

Yeah. You did your homework. I didn't.
