Hi all -

New to this stuff … have FT70Dr and want to get into Wires X National and international chat rooms. Can hit one Fusion - WiresX repeater but it has been offline for weeks.

Thinking MMDVM / pi Star hotspot might be an efficient mechanism to do so.

What are your recommendations? I do plan to add a mobile-based station such as the FTM-510ASP in the coming months if that is relevant. Thank you!

I have used a variety of hotspots with YSF --- a Pi-Star, and original OpenSpot, and an OpenSpot 3. I've given two Pi-Stars to other hams, who have been able to get them set up with some tinkering and the occasional viewing of a YouTube video. The documentation for the SharkRF OpenSpot hardware is better.

The SharkRF hardware is more expensive, but (especially the newer units) have some nifty features like bridging between modes (so, for example, you can use your System Fusion HT to access DMR or D-STAR conferences). The portable OpenSpot nodes work well with a cell phone; I often throw my OpenSpot 2 in my bag when I go to visit my mom, or for longer car trips. But there's nothing inherently wrong with the Pi-Star hardware, and it is cheaper.

As I understand it --- and I'd love it if someone can speak up and tell me I'm wrong! -- you can access YSF conferences, but not do the whole Wires-X thing with a hotspot. So voice QSOs work fine, although the extra Wires-X features do not.

It's a lot of fun. If you're patient and look for a few online tutorials, they're not hard to set up. Good luck!

Hotspots cannot access WIRES-X rooms, unless they are bridged to a YSF reflector. The more popular ones are. I use an FT70 with a hotspot. Works great.

Thx fellas. Just added a FT5D to the stable and might be selling the new FT70D with HRO MARS mod and all the goodies in the weeks to come. Top reasons - dual receive, APRS/GPS, and ability to access WiresX sans a hotspot. I’m sure I will have more questions learning this radio and the digital platform in general.

You guys are excellent resources!

The FT-70 is nice little radio. I would hang on to it if you can. Did you know that with the 5d and the 70d and a cable and software, you can access Wires x? The cable is $40 and the software is free.

Not with the 70D you cant, not with a cable, if you have the 5D in access mode then set up ythe 70D to talk to the 5D then you can, and walk about with the 70D
