Hi all,

I am wondering how zello works. How are they able to pick up so many different channels but also able to allow you to transmit on them?

Zello isn't a dedicated radio.. It's set up to function like a radio but it uses the cell network.

Rather than dialing someone directly using a phone number, the Zello app connects to the Zello server via the cell network. The server looks after connecting you to the desired 'channel'. The channels don't have any specific frequency. It's all virtual.

There are similar services.. Sprint, Verizon, and ATT have their own PTT style apps.

How do they get access to the channels? Is there some kind of database for something like this? How do they get access to the channels? Is there some kind of database for something like this?

Its all virtual. I dont know if you are familiar with the DMR or Digital Mobile Radio where you use talk groups and talk over networks. The network is something set up on a server. Zello works the same way as far as the network end of things go.

If you download the Zello app (free to download) and free to set up an account, there will be a tab in there for "channels". Through that you can search all sorts of stuff and you are bound to find a channel that someone has set up. You yourself can set up a channel for you and others to communicate on.

Zello has a lot of capabilities. My wife and I have been using for about 6 years now and I use it along with a few other people on a channel that one of the people I know created. Its really simple once you start using it.
