While at my cabin I monitor 146.52 in case anyone in the local national forest might call for assistance. One afternoon I was monitoring and heard a QSO in progress fade in. I understood from what I caught that a pilot was flying over and folks were calling and talking to him. I waited and gave him a call. We chatted but because I am in a fairly narrow valley, I had to let him go fairly quickly. I later found that he was an FA/18 pilot on his way to a base in Washington State.

I've heard that guy before. There's a thread mentioning him somewhere in here and I posted his call sign in it, but have long since forgot.

I'm glad you monitor .52 also. I nearly always monitor it when I am around my radios.

When monitoring 146.520 it best to have the squelch all the way open, but you can't really do that unless you have a specific radio for it. Its good to do that because sometimes there are transmissions/conversations that they are faint and a radio can't receive them if the squelch is closed.

Most people aren't going to want to listen to the rushing sound of an open suquelch, though. Just set it at threshold so the speaker stays quiet unless there's a signal. (On some Ham radios, the squelch setting is in the menu, and you may have to play with the settings to find the right setting for your installation. Depending on how complicated the menu system of your radio is, this may be fairly easy, or a PITA to do lol)

I'm all for using .52 to make contacts and then move on to another unused frequency.

That said, there are quite a few rural areas where people just use .52. I still think they should move, but the one thing I think you'll find is that is someone asks if they can try to make a contact on .52, most every rural area operators will give up the frequency for the person to do so.

If everyone just used .52 for contacts, it would be far better. No matter where you live, people can come to an agreement to ragchew on another freq. agreed by the people within the area.
I think it's more a matter of courtesy as it's not carved in stone anywhere.
