What I did in my Saab was mount it under the dash on the left side.
It faces up at a nice angle and its about 2 inches above my left knee.
It fits in there quite well.

A pipe dream would be, if that panel in the middle/top of the dash was a "Pop Up", you could mount the remote head in there, then have it pop open for use. But car makers don't think about us normal scanner people. I look forward to your results. BTW, does one REALLY need to see the screen? If I was that short on locations, I'd go with an under the seat and a better speaker, and just listen. Good luck, great install on the antenna.

If you can swing it a Homepatrol looks good in smaller spots.

The panel does pop up, but it's not deep enough for the radio.

I need the screen :)

Well I just thought of something. the remote head uses the serial port to connect to the scanner. I need the serial port for the GPS, so I can't use the remote head.

Mounting location decided.

As someone suggested, not needing to look at the screen, made me think.

If I'm using location based scanning anyway, wherever I am is what I'm listening to, so do I REALLY need to see the screen ALL the time? Not really.

I can flip the glove box down while I'm driving anyway so that isn't a big deal.

Big positive is drilled holes are hidden away. Plus scanner is hidden away when not in use.

What do you guys think?

That is a great compromise. It is out of the way and you can still see the screen when needed. I don't think the dash would have been a good idea for a few reasons,
1. The bad guys would see your radio.
2. It may not have been up to the California Vehicle Code. As this could be considered a distraction
3. As stated by another poster, it could become air born in an accident.
Good luck on the glove box install.

I think it looks good mounted there. It's out of the way, and hidden. Do you have an external speaker for your scanner? It may be hard to hear it inside that glovebox without one. I would mount one under the dash somewhere.

Just a thought.....if I had that particular vehicle layout.

Would it be of consideration to remove the center console dash pocket door(dead center of dashboard) and mount the radio in the open pocket?
You could make a cover plate out of some flat stock aluminum or thin metal from HomeDepot and dress it up with some paint or truck bed liner. When you leave the car, you can just put a ballcap over it.
This position would give you better "reachability" then the glovebox.
You could also bring it to a custom stereo shop and have them mold you an insert for your dash pocket out of fibreglass for no more than the cost of having it custom installed into your dash.

In the glovebox is fine for "not having it in your way" but darned when you have to/want to turn it up or pause on a particular channel at a moments notice. Thieves may not "see" your radio on the dash but they aint no dummy when they see the antenna sticking up.

The glove box mount does look good and you can hide it from potential thieves. The only bad thing is that you can't control it from the drivers seat. Maybe someone should invent a voice controlled scanner.

I can reach it actually. I'm tall and have long arms :)

What gets me is Vech Codes that MVD place, look at how the PD's have their set up's and the MVD never corrects them. They have computers (and how many accidents have they gotten into that was their own fault) And all the other distractions they have in their cars. But if you put a scanner it is a distraction, WHY You have a radio (what is a scanner A RADIO) you have GPS they do not say anything about that. If it is good for one why not everyone?

...anyway.

Here's the final install. I'll take a night picture too. I put some blue duck tape over the light in the glove box (it was too bright) but with the dash lights and LED display on the scanner, it looks cool with a blue haze.

What do you guys think is the better location? Center of dash or left side of dash?

Let's talk antenna, I'll say that this type is designed to have a "ground plane" i.e. it works best when sitting on top and in the center of a large horizontal metal sheet. Best place from this POV would be obviously right in the center of the roof but we both know it won't gonna happen as you'll have to drill a hole. What you can do is reposition it on the trunk lip so it's surrounded by as much metal as possible.
