408.000 P25 in Omaha

The FCC doesn't assign Federal frequencies it's the NTIA. They don't make their listings public. Did you get a PL or DCS tone? My only guess would be FPS only because they run 408.200 here but who knows.

mancow.... the ntia is releasing that band in urban areas to allow the fcc to lease out 400-420 .... a few military installations have had to push from 400-420 to 380-400 because of it.
It hasnt happened out here yet but could happen someday.
Elkhorn is the only thing out in that area that I could see being under ntia.... thats why I asked. .... but I dont think its elkhorn....

I don't think its Elkhorn either. The only thing the Elkhorn site could use it for is to get a hold of Offutt since it is too far away to get into their trunking system.
I don't think it is the National Guard either. When ever I see them they are using what looks like low band radios and it is anolog.
There are alot of federal agencies in Omaha FBI, DEA, and many others of their state offices in Omaha.
I don't think I said this before but it sounded like it was simplex, but the communication was really short that I heard so I could not really tell.
Hopefully will hear it again but a longer conversation and maybe be albe to tell who it is.

Over my lunch break today, I took a drive down Center, from 60th to 29th, and I observed that the 408.0000 signal was particularly "strong" all along the route. I had probably 6 to 7 "long" transmissions of greater than 10 seconds each.
I put strong in quotation marks because I had my RS Pro97, which doesn't do P25, but I couldn't detect any "flutter" in the signal, or other noise that would generally indicate a less-than-optimal signal.
I wonder if this signal isn't originating from the Masonic Manor, at 52nd and Leavenworth.
Just my observations!

On my way into work this morning, I heard several transmissions on 408.0000. Most of them are single-digit unit numbers calling each other - "1 calling 2 - are you in your office?", "No, 2 is away". Another one I heard was "We're currently maintenancing the alarms on 10".
Some of the traffic, although short, sounds like law-enforcement traffic, although I can't confirm that.
Last night, on the way home, I heard a female voice ("3") talking to a male voice ("4"), but I was in the 132nd and Center area, where the signal wasn't as strong, so the voice was somewhat garbled.
The signal, however, is VERY STRONG along I480 and the Leavenworth area, and points to the west. My 396T's signal meter is pegged in this area, as well as downtown.
Just my observations.

Hummm... I hadn't considered the VA, but a repeater at that location would account for the high signal strength in the I480 area - VA is at 42nd and Center.
Next time I'm in the area, I'll drive near the VA and listen with my attenuator turned on. If I can still hear it, I'll try removing my antenna, which should give a pretty good indication of where it's at if I can still hear the signal.
Is the channel fairly busy during regular business hours? The only time I get to listen is around the Noon hour.

I heard this in use this past Saturday night around 2330. I was near 52nd and Dayton and it was pretty strong there, but they only talked for like 15 seconds.
With it being P25 there is a good chance it could be simulcast, or coming from a very, very good tower site near Gretna.

Humm... I am beginning to believe the theory of a simulcast system more and more on this frequency. And with P25, it should work pretty well.
The two tall towers near Gretna (KPTM, KGBI) would be a logical place to put a repeater like this for wide-area coverage.
From one of my earlier posts, I was monitoring this system while driving east on Center, near the VA. I had my BCD396T in the car, using the rubber-duck antenna and was still getting 5 bars out of 5 on the signal strength indicator. A strong signal like that, inside the car, would seem to indicate that I was pretty close to one of the transmitter locations.
A signal from the 198th and Pflug road area should be strong, but I tend to doubt that it would peg my signal indicator inside of a car near 42nd and Center, which is a shade over 17.5 miles as the crow flies.
