1-2 weeks availability from Gigaparts

I had the 8600 reserved with Gigaparts. Just got an email from them, their "special price" for reservation holders is $2700. I'm passing on this one.

Think I will forget the IC-8600 at $2600. This is going to be a hard sell in this day of SDR radio. When the R-8500 came out, no such thing (AFAIK) as SDR. A different story nowadays.

Universal is selling them to pre-order customers for $2549.95.

I am on the fence on this one, I had drawn the line at about $2400 in my mind. And I have several other pieces of gear that cover the same freq range and modes. So I may not really need the 8600, but I still have a want for the 8600.

Hello All,

I'm on Universal's reservation list. Planning on trading in my R9K to help lower the price somewhat. After initial discussions with them, it almost feels as if I am buying a car (Ok, throw in the overpriced carry handle and the plug in $59.00 power supply) and let's see what we can do.

My reservation number was high (shoulda slipped a couple of bucks in) and due to Icom strongly allocating supply, I do not expect to receive it until very late July or early August. It's the old man's birthday month, so why not??

I would have really loved to take the R9K to a high elevation while laying out a good long antenna for her with a nice ground. I'm impressed with what I am able to monitor in my apartment with the antenna mounted in the attic, but no doubt the 86K will be a blast too.

The You tube demo videos leave much to be desired for me; I am more concerned with SSB reception than I am shortwave broadcast and commercial FM. The touch screen is interesting.

Anyone ever play with a Galaxy R-530???? Looking for a any (scarce) service info on her. Good performing set and performs right along with the R9K.

What is interesting is the

Icom R8600 has 11 discrete rf band pass filters in the hf bands
Icom 7300 has 15 discrete rf band pass filters in the hf bands

Makes me think the 7300 would be the better receiver .

Different horses for different courses. I have not had my hands on the 7300, but from memory I think the widest instantaneous bandwidth (displayed bandwidth) is 1 MHz? And the R8600 is 5 MHz wide. Possibly fewer BPFs (fewer and wider each) had to be used to allow a configuration that would work with the wider IBW.

I am waiting for Black Friday. I was told by someone that these will be 2100 before Christmas. Icom always gets a high price in the beginning because they know people like you all will pay the higher rate and can't wait. I will take the wait time and get it in November.

These kinds of things always drop off in price after they have been on the market for a while. Early adopters always pay a bit of a premium. Personally I doubt it will be $2100 by Christmas, but I bet it is under $2300 around then. I think this receiver will probably stable out at about $2000+/- after it has been on the market a while, say 12 to 24 months.

The question to the early adopter is, are you willing to miss out on the use between now and the time it hits its long term stable price? Is that savings worth waiting for in the users eyes?

I had made the decision to wait myself after the $2600 price came out. I told my wife I was putting off the purchase until the price came down some. She asked how much it would come down and when, and when I told her I don't know, nobody does, but probably no more than $500-$600 in the next year or so she put it in perspective for me.

If the price drops $500 in the next 12 months that is maybe $42 a month...about the cost of the two of us going out to casual dinner one time each of those months, or a box of ammo. Will I get the equivalent of at least one dinner a month, or using one box of ammo a month, enjoyment out of using the radio over the next 12 months? Probably. So I could wait, and save the money, or I could get it now and enjoy it now and for the next 12 months, for about the cost of one box of ammo each month. I would not give buying that ammo a second thought, why should I be so concerned over possible, not guaranteed, savings of that amount? If I use the radio two hours each month I have gotten more use out of the radio than the ammo.

It is like when any new device comes on the market, you can wait until the price bottoms out or you can get it and use it while others are waiting for the price to bottom out. I most often wait a bit myself, at least until the initial surge of early buyers is over and the price starts to drop a bit, but in this case she talked me into getting it now.

Well good luck on your new purchase.

Would you please make some videos of HF bands when you get the radio.

The videos on you tube right now leave a lot to be desired,

IC-R8600

Well, I got mine yesterday from Universal.

Yes, if you only want an HF radio, you'd probably be happy with an IC-7300. They are very similar in operation and (so far) performance. Being very touch-centric, there's nothing particularly clunky about using this transceiver as just a receiver. I haven't liked that so much in the past.

On a very large antenna, I get the occasional OVP light in the evenings in some bands with the 7300, and haven't had that with the 8600 yet.

I am pretty pleased, so far. Reception everywhere is very good; with lots of SDR-type bells and whistles to increase enjoyment. The audio quality is very nice from the built-in speaker, considering its size. Sync detection works as it should. Airband reception is great. My R9000 might squeeze a lead on a very weak signal, but it may be more audio shaping than real signal grabbing. And of course, there's no comparison with the two spectrum scopes; the 8600 is beautiful.

I live in a rural area, and so far have not had much luck with the 8600 for county police on P25. I have better luck with my IC-R2500, but I think it may be a signal strength issue. The 8600 is decoding the info, but no audio yet. I think I'll get there.

It's expensive. I'm not selling my other receivers, yet. But I can see selling a bunch of them!

Hello all: well I received radio today.

I don't say this lightly : this is the BEST receiver I have ever used.

It it beautiful to look at and easy to use.

HF is great it out performs my Perseus receiver.
I had a Icom R8500 and there is no comparsion . The R8600 just leaves it in the dust.

It receives wonderfully accross all bands . I give it a solid 10 .
