Very little TETRA in private hands, it is all used by our emergency services and some large public transport companies, have seen very little NXDN, I gather it is being pushed by Kenwood resellers to replace analogue VHF wide area community repeaters..

At around $3 thousand USD's list price. this might come in a bit steep, especially for those of us who already have the AOR DV1. Granted the scope function is very nice (at least from its initial appearance), and I sometimes wonder if AOR could add a stand-alone scope to the existing DV1 receiver.

Another little birdie is whispering in my other ear that for those who have the BIGGER bucks, there could very well be an Icom R9600 on the distant horizon----- that is an R9500 with all the next digital functions incorporated. Of course, you're now getting into the price range of a small call.

I'm a bit perplexed about the missing DMR and Fusion functions in the R8600. In NYC, DMR is in extremely wide use, not just on business channels, but on the 440 ham band as well. And while Fusion is certainly not running neck-in-neck with DMR, it is outpacing D-Star.

Another item on the downside is that the width of the scope is WAY to narrow to be useful on VHF or UHF---- its philosophy is geared more toward the use on the amateur radio bands below 30 MHz.

I got to play a little more with an 8600 on Saturday and was very pleased with what I saw. The band scope will do a 5MHz span, which is not massive, but much better than the limited span seen on most HF receivers.

The HF performance is reported to be similar to the IC7300 which is no slouch. I only played with some VHF/UHF analog FM stuff and it performed as I would expect for something that cost $2k+. Icom would only state suggested list price and did not even speculate on a street price.

I inquired about DMR as many people probably did and the answer is the in the hardware is capable of DMR and it seems the lack of DMR is a licensing issue. Icom would not speculate on adding it in the future except to say the hardware will allow it.

I'm due for a new receiver toy and the 8600 is now on my short list.
