Based on reading the document and JETNET's actions, I have discontinued my receiver from feeding ADSBExchange.com pending the outcome of the lawsuit.

Hi everyone, I wanted to let everyone know that the ADSB enthusiast community now has a new site up and running.

As stated previously in this thread, after the sale of ADSBx, the adsb tracking community was very divided about the news and a lot of people split off and started their own sites. A few examples are ADSB.fi, TheAirTraffic, adsb.lol, adsb.one, etc. Even PlaneSpotters now has their own version of “Radar” up and running.

The thing that makes Airplanes.live special is that it was formed by people who left ADSBx after the sale with one goal in mind - to start a site by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts - THAT CAN NEVER BE SOLD. To that end, bylaws were set in place during setup that will prevent that from ever happening. The people behind adsb.one have now joined forces with airplanes.live as well, and are sharing adsb data, with further site integration coming in the near future.

For full disclosure, since this is my first post and all, I am in no way affiliated with any of these sites (other than feeding data to them). I am just a fellow enthusiast who likes to watch and track interesting airplanes. I feed data to 7 different sites (4 of which are commercial), but my excitement and loyalty is with the community sites. If you like what you see at Airplanes.live, and would like to get in on the action, they have both a feeder client, and a full image out now as well. Their discord group is also very active. Come by and check it out!

How many feeders are there for each site and what are their locations? I know that info for adsbx already.

2 screens shots at same time. New (Airplanes live) site has less total planes then the original one (ADS-B Exchange - track aircraft live)

The numbers fluctuate some, but as of posting, TheAirTraffic has 23 adsb and 589 MLAT feeders. However something is wrong with the website because the other day they had almost 700 adsb feeds. Adsb.fi has 1714 adsb and 1597 mlat, and airplanes.live has 939 mlat feeders. I cannot find the number of adsb feeders airplanes.live has, however based on the mlat number, I’d guess around 1100-1200 feeders at this time. For the approximate feeder location please see the links below (the exact location is offset by around 1km for privacy).

Yes, as airplanes.live currently has about 1/10th as many feeders as ADSBx. However, on a semi-related note, it is my understanding that ADSBx recently lost access to their oceanic satellite coverage, so now only planes directly seen by ground based feeders are visible on their site.

I am trying the first website. While I am able to see the air traffic at the nearest international airport(RDU). If I try to view thair traffic for another local SFO or IAD, it gives me an error.

@Buggs92 - Thank you for the information. As to oceanic coverage, I'm not mourning that loss, but I'm sure there are others that do. 99% of the time I am reviewing air traffic within 50 miles and at times 300 miles out. The 1% is when I look around. More important to me is that there are eight other feeders within 50 miles of my location that feed ADSBexchange. With AirTraffic and adsb.fi there is only one other.

Anyways, for those that may be interested, ADSBexchange.com has over 9700 feeders as of 01:00 Hours 12/12/2023 UTC.

So, Despite the sale,ADSB-Exchange, is still the better option by far?

@Chris0516 - It depends. Whichever service has more ADS-B feeders in the area you want to observe is the better option. Also, not every feeder has the same gear. My feed covers significantly more than the at least the eight others nearby, but those nearby feeders help fill what I may miss, as well as help with MLAT. Some of those feeders nearby are thousands of feet above me in the Sierras and others are closer to local airports tracking aircraft on the tarmac.

I am using a DPD Productions ADSB antenna at 30’ above ground. 50‘ of LMR-400 coaxial cable goes into a 1090 MHz filter and amplifier before a 0dB loss/gain active splitter, as I feed two different sites. I could improve my coverage with better coax, but the cost and weight of it is not worth the slight gain. I previously used RG6 for years and my coverage was about 15-20% less, but I was getting 200+ miles with that. The better coax helped with lower altitude aircraft as well distant.

The point is many feeders are using a less effective system. If my system did not exist, the coverage of those feeders working together would still be fine, due to the power of shared systems.

* By the way, I had to adjust my configuration with ADSBx to show my location on the coverage map, so there may be others nearby also sharing I do not see. I also wonder if those other sites are using the same config. Thus, there may be more feeders in areas that are not shown on the coverage map. This is due to a privacy issue to protect a feeder, even though the map does not show the exact location when enabled.

As of right now, I would say yes. They do have way better coverage due to a massive amount of feeders compared to the other (community) sites (I would venture a guess that FlightAware [and/or Flightradar24] ultimately has the best coverage, but since they filter flights I’m not counting them here).

ADSBx is now a commercial entity, owned by a private equity firm, so things could change for them at a moments notice.

The point with my initial post was just to try to raise some awareness for a few of the newer community sites and give a small update on them. That’s all. :)

I have struggled with this for a while now knowing what is the best site. At home I run an RTL. As an example this morning I was tracking 11 planes from my house but none of the sites show 9 of the planes. I do feed to PlaneFinder (as thats theo nly windows based feeder I've found so far) and that site showed my planes. Its definately hit or miss trying to figure out which of 10 sites to go to to look for stuff.

I use ADSBx 99% of the time. Once in a while I use Planefinder as I have provided a feed for over a decade to them. I like the PF AR feature.

Hello everyone, Sorry for the really late post. We had to get things together and deal with a lot of drama. I'll get right to it.

Airplanes.Live is built by the some of developers that built ADSBExchange before the sell out to a private equity firm.

Long story short we hope to build at Airplanes.Live what we wanted to before greed took hold of one man. It's a shame Dan told us "our agreements were theoretical talk", sold out our work, then used lawyers to threaten us. Unfortunately, two (maybe 3) of the guys that did a lot of work over the years, including hosting and running the infrastructure are having to sue to protect their IP and breached contracts. ( DocumentCloud ) Case hearings start in March with the jury trail scheduled for summer.

Coverage is community sourced like all other sites, so adding a feed in your area fills that coverage area. ADSBx started with a few feeds on VRS (we ran that for years), it won't be hard to surpass them and have something that supports the community as well. Help us reach our goal of supporting STEM grants, aviation scholarships, and just being good citizens for this hobby.

I hope all the ADS-B hosts will support us and if you have questions, please reach out.

Happy to answer any questions here or via DM/email.

Website: AIRPLANES.LIVE

If some of you make antenna or other gear - contact us. We hope to support the larger RF community via our Shopify store and partnerships.

If you have an ADS-B feeder - piaware or etc. Adding Airplanes.Live takes 5 minutes.

If you are interested in running a new build, we have an advanced Pi image that also optionally feeds FA FR24 from the GUI.

Thanks!
