I can't pick up the CC here in NE Cobb. I'm somewhat surprised since I'm not that far from the ATL as the crow flies. Of course I could hear Gwinnett clear as day in the pre-digital days as well.

Hey Ross, I'm in East Cobb not far from Roswell and can pick this new System up obviously. Do what I do and get up in a tree and pray for low wind gusts while recording new talkgroups!

The man's got connections! I think it's probably because he's spent so much time with law enforcement (like in the back seat) :)

I'll only say I was in the back seat with my programming cable attached to their equipment! :)

If you will notice on the list, there is NO surveillance 2 channels listed, but on one of the higher banks, they have the OTG channels.

Now, once we identify what the channel is, we have the actual name that goes with it!

APD officially off 7E00

simulcasting for PD ended today, all the old PD talkgroups on the old 7E00 are silent. Only East Point PD/FD, College Park PD/FD and GSP Troop C are still active and operating in analog. Fire is still patched with alot of analog users still keying up on 7E00.

Most likely they are FIT as according to the XTS layout that I posted, they don't have a Surveillance 2 anymore.

BTW - I programmed up the scanners at Fox5 this evening and let me tell you something, the Atlanta P25 actually sounds good! Not that I think much of the P25, but it was a whole lot better than listening to the Cobb P25!

I have to add the audio is very nice and warm on my GRE PSR scanner and my Uniden 396t sounds terrible on it and Cobby by comparison.

Here are two more talkgroups (probably TACs) an airport MED unit keyed up on each by accidently calling dispatcher...they are AFD Hartsfield

19616 AFD Hartsfield-

19617 AFD Hartsfield-

all the Atlanta radios and repeaters are using the latest DSP (12.00.10) which includes Motorola "Noise Shield" and it is a vast improvement over what we have in Cobb.

The XTS2500 I use at work on Cobb's digital system has a DSP ver of 8.00.00 which is 3 years old. It's painful to listen to in comparison.

One of my biggest complaints with Motorola is their lack of making easy firmware and DSP upgrades. All other manufacturers (Icom, Kenwood, MA/Com) give away their updates for free. Only Motorola makes it a pain and dealers charge a fee to do DSP uplifts on each radio. Even at say, 35 bucks a piece, when you have 3000 radios on a system, this adds up.

Imagine if Microsoft started charging for service packs for Vista. You'd see people jump ship to Red Hat in a flash.

Just look at Cleveland, still using VSELP. That's as has-been 1995 as iDEN.

What? You mean that Cobb got fleeced by Motherola? No way! :) Look at even scanners! They offer free updates of firmware.

Kinda makes me wonder, does not this "new" P25 system happen to have OTAR? Could not the upgrade be done that way?

OTAR is over the air rekeying, for re-keying of encryption keys.
If you are referring to OTAP, Over the Air Programming, it is supported by the P25 phase I standard.
POP25 as Motorola calls it (Programming Over P25) is supported for radios with higher than HOST version 9.
However this does not allow for firmware (HOST) or DSP upgrades, just remote codeplug manipulation. This does make things easier, as all you do is select a single or group of radio IP addresses, and flag them for POP25. It can be scheduled at a certain time to minimize disruption to the user.

Firmware and DSP upgrades are rather large (8MB of RAM for HOST/DSP in XTS5K/XTL and 4MB of RAM in 1500/2500) and with a low data rate already, you can see it isn't practical to push firmware and DSP over a P25 system without disrupting the use of the system. So yes, someone must physically touch the radio with a computer, cable and I-Button to do a HOST/DSP refresh. And Motorola doesn't give the I-Buttons out for free.

Other vendors don't make things such a hassle. Kenwood for example, just recently released new firmware for the 2180/3180 series that adds MDC signaling in the firmware, no need to add a plug-in board. Just re-flash the radio, and they have been distributing it to their authorized dealers at no charge as part of a service release. You think Motorola would want the latest and greatest firmware and DSP in all their current Astro 25 customers radios but nope, unless you specify and pay extra for this when you put your RFP out, you gotta pay. and pay. and pay. and pay. and pay....
