If you do think about doing that later this spring, AND if it comes to mind to reach out to me, please do -- I'll provide you with the most up to date list (not everything is in the DB because it isn't all confirmed) and I'll give you a list of potential sites to check out on your route.

Thanks!

Mike

Looks like this trip will most likely be in the June/July timeframe, attachment shows our route, I'll let you know for certain closer to the time -

I’m going to start leaving my SDS200 on record to start catching talkgroups.

Sounds good. Post any questionable stuff ya have. If you are aware of the unit numbering for units out your way on EDACS, look for them to be using the same unit #s for now but to likely change once migrated to P25. At least that is what an AEP guy around here said would likely happen.

For instance, 77xx are Steubenville, 74xx is Canton, and there are 75xx and 79xx around here that I haven't figured out. If you are able to figure out the unit numbering for a specific area you listen to and can definitively match them up to being a certain AEP location where they have trucks, let me know. I'd like to try and start tracking the unit numbers and aras they serve now, before they all change over post-P25 migration.

And in the case that anybody wonders, no I am not referring to radio IDs. I'm talking about the unit numbers they use over hte radio. "7713 to Steubenville Trouble" etc.

Zanesville UID 98xx

Paul,

So you are saying that when an AEP employee out in a trunk in Zanesville calls back to dispatch (for Trouble or meter collection), they specifically say "98xx to trouble" or something like that? I don't want radio UID/RID. That is not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for the actual unit numbers that they verbally reference themselves as.

No that was radio ID - sorry. I'm setting one up to record later today so I'll catch that.

So far, comms are pretty few and far between. Audio is extremely loud (similar too old AM over modulated) and somewhat difficult to copy.

It looks like 2232 is Z ville trouble but still need to confirm how they call/announce.

FWIW - I also can copy the Mt Perry site.

Is it possible that unit numbers are their truck/vehicle numbers and have no bearing to location?

It's been years, like low-band era years, but I believe that is what they used back then. Seem to remember an engraved dash plaque with the truck number.

So fa, all with comms to Zanesville

Just went thru over 100 recordings. Lists of patching going on. Seems like they are patching Edacs and P25. Users were talking about radios displaying EDACS or P25. Also testing emergency banners and radio ids. Looks like they are going to program the IDs as the truck numbers. Also heard users testing portable radios.

A lot of it sounds like Indiana though.

And today, I’m picking up a P25 control channel on 857.8125 which is licensed to AEP at a variety of sites.
WACN 92715, Sys ID 1FA.
The oddball WACN definitely points at Harris, and I know AEP has had a long-term love affair with GE/Harris. Plus, they

I am not sure what you say "oddball WACN". In the standard scheme (not always used) , it decodes as WQIM which in the standard scheme should be the beginning of their callsign, and their callsign is indeed WQIM299.

Apparnetly a lot is done via Indiana. For instance, unless there is an active weather event or big power evennt in our area, most of the time after hours the local radios communicate with Fort Wayne. So it's not surprising that you hearing things referencing Indiana.

Part of the key to this will be matching up the patched traffic heard on P25 with the corresponding active talkgroup on EDACS (for which we already know the usage). That's what we have been trying to do here in East Ohio. We are aware of quite a few more active talkgroups in East Ohio but haven't been able to pin them down as to whether they are Trouble, MCS, or one of the others. If we're lucky, which is rare, one of us monitoring EDACS at the same time we are monitoring P25 and can determine what the traffic is based upon the EDACS talkgroup.

Paul,

Since you use a scanner to monitor AEP P25, could you tell me what the scanner shows for the SysID when you are parked on the AEP P25 site in Zanesville?

For anyone who can monitor the control channel of one or more of these sites with a scanner, please check and let us know what the current SysID is.

The two systems are currently patched as they are changing out radios. Voice audio is still pretty muddy but hopefully it will be improved.

Talkgroups that I can confirm.

2248 Columbus Trouble West
2244 Columbus Trouble East
2263 Athens Trouble
2202 Lima Trouble

@firemantom26 is on a road trip. Thus far he has verified:

1. 74.74 is Macksburg -- he collected data, which he may or may not post later. Site has been added to DB
2. Macksburg has neighbors of 77.77 and 75.75 (855.1625) -- 75.75 is likely Marietta
3. 40.40 is NOT online, so it was not possible to determine if 40.40 is Cambridge or Bloomfield

Tom is heading down 77 to find a vantage point to possibly pick up 75.75 direct to confirm it is Marietta and gather details.
