This is a difficult post to write this afternoon.

My old friend, monitoring cohort and fellow retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer, Larry - has passed away after a brief illness.

I first met Larry at one of the Monitoring Times conventions in Atlanta in the 1990s. We've stayed in touch over the years, sharing stories here and there from the old days of newsprint Monitoring Times magazine.

My sincere condolences to his wife of MANY years, Gayle - (Author / Editor of the Global Radio Guide)

RIP, Chief.

Sad to hear this. Odd that RR says your post is dated yesterday, but Been Verified says he died in August.

"William Larry Vanhorn

Born January 1952

Deceased in Aug 2023 in Clay, NC
Location Brasstown, NC"

(Brasstown, where Larry lived is in Clay Co.)
If you see more information to clarify the date, please post it.

Larry was one of the good ones. I enjoyed talking milcom with him. He was always willing to share his knowledge and he just plain loved radio. RIP Chief!

I don’t see that it matters when he passed away. The OP never stated when this happened, so maybe he just found out.

Anyway, enough about that. No need to reply to this.

What a huge loss to the milcom/airshow monitoring community. Even with all of the changes in the UHF spectrum, I still find his stuff useful to this day.

Maybe his legacy will be honored when we fill in all of the UHF "holes"? ;)

I'm saddened to hear of Larry's passing. I met him long ago at a hamfest in VA Beach sometime in the 80s when I think he was doing a utility column in one of the radio magazines and had emailed back and forth the last few years about some local military frequencies and systems. I'd actually searched for his obituary a few months ago when I saw his blog and Twitter hadn't been updated in a while and his column went missing in the spectrum monitor, but didn't find anything at the time. I always enjoyed his milcom column, he was a nice guy and he and his expertise will be missed. My condolences to his wife and family.
