A couple of days late but saddened to hear about the recent passing of Larry Van Horn, N5FPW after a brief illness. Monitoring Times was required reading for anyone that has worked in the radio system engineer field over the last few decades and Larry was an amazing wealth of information. A retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer Larry was THE resource for military comms. I corresponded with Larry a few times over the years over when I was featured in MT and he was always kind and courteous in my dealings with him.
My sincere condolences go out to Larry's wife Gayle and Larry's family and many friends worldwide.
Strong Signals Chief.

I see that like many of you I was fortunate to read Larry's material for years, converse with him often on the MT BBS, and even meet him in person during one of the MT conventions held in Atlanta. Rest in peace.

Dang, his sharing of knowledge gave me the boost to get into milair monitoring during a difficult and lonely period of my life. The distraction it provided me helped me hang on thru that time to a point in which it felt worthwhile living again.

This is why you should never delay thanking people, whether they were aware of it or not, who have assisted you in life, while they are still alive to hear it....

This is a difficult post to write this afternoon.

My old friend, monitoring cohort and fellow retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer, Larry - has passed away after a brief illness.

I first met Larry at one of the Monitoring Times conventions in Atlanta in the 1990s. We've stayed in touch over the years, sharing stories here and there from the old days of newsprint Monitoring Times magazine.

My sincere condolences to his wife of MANY years, Gayle - (Author / Editor of the Global Radio Guide)

RIP, Chief.

RIP Chief!! We'll miss you! There will be a huge hole in the monitoring community going forward. I worked with Larry on some projects and I learnt a lot from him over the years!! Condolences to Larry's wife, his daughter Gayle and all of his family!

Thank you @batdude for sharing the above article from TSM. Larry helped me chose the right scanner more than once when I was living in NM in order to hear the important signals including LANL's "new" 400 MHz Edacs system back in the 90's. R.I.P. good sir!
