Suggestion

Hopefully Uniden has listened to those of us in public safety who for years have been asking for a ruggedized scanner as the typical plastic cases do not hold up to the wear and tear of in the field, being in the thick of it. It is not always practical to wear a scanner in a radio holder when on duty as many simply hang it, clip it or place it wherever it will fit.

Looking forward to the new units and as soon as they are out, I will one of the first I'm sure to provide feedback.

Merry Christmas to all,

Mike

Threres nothing wrong with the case strength, it's extremly rugged, I know, my 396T took a beating this year but it's still ticking, it has some battle scars but still perfectly usable, nothing broken which actually amazes me, I'd just like to see addition water protection, otherwise no issues with the 396T case.

Should have cited...

I should have cited specifics then and yes, I do agree that my 396's are tough however they have broken while in service with me in the past and while "the majority" may state that oh no, their tough, many of that majority do not use theirs in rough service conditions. Quite the contrary actually as many avid scannist will buy a belt case for theirs or leave it on the desk or in a cup holder in their vehicles. As I stated in my earlier post, wearing one in a case in my field isn't always the best idea due to the constant need to switch between fields, settings and frequencys etc. Usually mine is worn around my neck via lanyard and tucked into a mag pouch on my vest. Still, it gets abused this way. Just my particular case, not meaning to discount anyone else's experiences or scanners. Its just something I'd like to see done because spending $200 or more on a scanner isn't fun when the "fix" is already in place to alleviate this when it concerns regular 2 way radios. As a friend of mine said recently when we were talking about this; "if those who made these things did what we did to and with them, then they'd make'em tougher."

When is the BCD396XT coming out?

Really dude? Did you even bother to read this thread before making the above post? I have answered this question myself several times already in this thread...AGAIN FROM THE VERY FIRST FREAKING POST BY UPMAN IN THIS THREAD:

Both models are expected to be released in early 2009 at prices comparable to the models being replaced.

Please read through the rest of the thread before asking other questions.

Ya know, one thing that's getting really annoying is people getting so bent out of shape over the dumbest, most trivial things.
KE4ZNR needs to take a few deep breaths and relax!
Instead of making someone sift through all 550 or so posts, which takes forever, why not just answer the question with a simple answer.
What is so wrong with just providing a simple answer rather than making yourself look like an out of control, know-it-all type? This is getting out of hand in a number of posts where people don't have anything else better to do that act like idiots.
This is a forum that's designed to HELP people, not talk down to them.
This is just a hobby, and as a hobby it's meant to have fun, share and enjoy!
Cheers!

I agree. People should read POSTS first before asking a repeat question. I also see a l arge number of NEW POSTS being started up when the same subject has been covered by many other similar posts. The person starting a NEW POST should at least do some reading and a search to see if they can find the answer before starting a NEW POST. I too would be interested in the date of the new release, but having read numerous posting, am just going to wait till they scanners are out. Asking for the date won't make them come out any sooner.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

My 396T has had tree limbs (large heavy ones) fall on it, even heavier logs, bounced off cement walls at the race track, knocked off and stepped on in large crowds, even wound up in the mouth of a 130# Rottweiler/Pitbull the other night ((not sure how she got it!), constantly having a 6+ pound camera and lens bouncing off it on the job, survived getting tackled by three players while shooting a football game (I still feel that one!) and through ot all it's just got a few scratches, even the belt clip survived it all. At the race track the belt clip and scanner hold the headphones when they are not in use. So yes it gets abused, some of the tree branches and logs were well over 100 lbs. Try going through a yard full of trees (40 of them) that are 40 to 60 feet tall, well, they were before the tornado took them down. There were few clear places in the yard to walk, branches constatntly hitting or snagging on the scanner, and more than caught it as the branch was cut, even the bnc to sma adapter survived it all.

AMEN BROTHER!

I was on the receiving end of this a week or so back. I actually made a point of reading through the posts first, but somehow missed the ONE that I was inquiring about. It sure didn't justify the rude response..........

It doesn't take forever to use the SEARCH in the upper right corner under the Scanner Master ad, it only takes a second.....

THANK YOU! I agree 100%, it is extremely annoying for anyone to post a sincere question only to have others respond with such arrogance and haughtiness! This site is intended to assist other who are interested in this hobby... not to make people look dumb.

You guys are so right. It is almost intimidating to need to ask questions on this board. Most questions in which a short answer would suffice usually are responded to by the "better than the rest of us bunch" who only know how to say use the "search." I search before I ask and I don't always find what I need on my own, and don't need to be told to search again.

I think a major part of the issue is that many, probably 96% of the questions could be answered by research on the part of the scanner owner, including reading the manual. There are so many questions asked on a daily basis that are either in the manual or already answered 100 times here before that it gets aggravating answering the same old questions day in and day out. Look how many threads there are on just problems with the 3.01 firmware, three just today, that is due to people being too lazy to research the issue instead of looking in the proper thread or reading one of the 1500 others started. There could be two threads on the the verion 3.01 problems and the next poster goes ahead and starts another.... THATS LAZY! And yes, I get aggravated by lazy people, and I get tired of typing the same thing over and over. If someone wants to think it's "intimidateing" thats their problem, maybe they should have done a better job of researching the issue first, skimming over the manual or threads isn't an excuse to make post 1500 on a subject thats answered 1499 times. When searching for something if I don't find what I need after 6 tries then I'll post a question.... those attempts may take a whole 3 minutes and I'm a slow typer.

My new GRE PSR-500 & 600.

I know that it's kind of annoying for us to keep on asking but "early 2009" is EXTREMELY vague. It would be nice if we could at least know if it's going to be Q1 or Q2.

I hate both of my new GRE scanners. I hate the way(s) they work. I hate the ways they dont work. I hate the way they look. I hate the quality of the sound. I hate the much larger size. They have some very commendable features, some superior to Uniden--- but I hate the way they implemented them.

I love all my older Unidens. Their engineers must think like I do. Simple. Straightforward. Take a complex feature like trunking and make it look simple to the user. The official word for this is 'Intuitive'. Uniden gets it. GRE doesn't.

I make a living as an Embedded Software Programmer for an industrial control product. I hate it when people ask me for a release date, because it depends on a lot of things I can't control. I hate it even more when I give them a date and then they hold me to it later on. This part of my job sucks, but it's still part of my job. A lot of people both inside and outside my company have a lot riding on the time frame that I finish within, and they indeed need something to go on. Maybe I am unable to give the exact date, but I am sure in a better position than anyone else in my company to make an educated guess.

So why did I recently spend $1000 to purchase 2 new GRE's that I didn't even want? Because I live in Utah, and during the rebanding transition, GRE was the only game in town. Was Uniden close to a new release? Who knows? Not me. Right now is Uniden getting close to a release? I still have no way to know. Some of you guys act like the only reason we want an estimated release date is so we can gossip about it.

I, for one, was in need of some new scanners due to rebanding. I had been saving my $ for months in anticipation. I tried to follow the expected release dates for the Unidens, but they were either vague or non existent. I can have the GRE's right now, even though I know I would like the Unidens better. What's a guy to do? If there was a decent chance the Unidens will be ready in the next 2-3 months I would for sure wait. 3-6 months - maybe. But ??? days/months/years? No way. I got the GRE's. I spent quite a bit of money. I really would have preferred to give my money to Uniden and own the Uniden product. I spent the same money and now I have to live with scanners I didnt even want for years to come. Uniden spent the same money on development, and yet their #1 fan bought from their competitor this time. GRE is the only winner, and they must be laughing all the way to the bank.

That was my official statement to Uniden. I hope they read it.

And now to my main point on this forum. Why do some of you guys act like it is so wrong to ask if there have been any updates on the expected release date? If there are none, just say no. If the expected date has changed for the better or for the worse, just say so. This isn't a trivial matter. A lot of people are trying to decide how to spend a lot of money, so we all have a lot riding on it. I think it is a perfectly valid question, except for me. I already spend my hard-earned money this time.
