For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Here's the latest email from Ed on 9/29/15:

" Everyone repeat after me, "WHEW". Why? Because the tri-band mobile is
testing good so far. Last Friday, the sample arrived from China. I only took it out of the box for a quick look before sending it on its way to my
friends for testing. The face of the radio has not changed in size as I could tell, still just like its brother/sister, the AT-5888UV dual band
model. I did immediately notice a difference in the rest of the radio's case. It was thicker, having more of a heat-sink top rather than just a flat
metal plate. Still the radio had a good look and feel to it, nothing oversized at all. I have a couple friends that live in a 220-active area, that both happen to be knowledgeable technicians. The sample was quickly re-boxed and sent to them over the weekend for testing. This evening, I received my first email report on the new radio, and so far it's looking good.

Here's what's reported so far: 'So far so good! Looks like they had to enlarge the case design some for additional components. There is also now a speaker on top and bottom. I must say that i really like the look of it! I have ONLY done some initial testing thus far but i think they got it! In the next few days i hope to put it on test gear so i can tell you exactly how it does. Thus far, the audio on 220mhz is spot on over the air. Cross band repeat audio sounds good as well. I haven't tested sensitivity yet. Also to note is that the unit is running MUCH cooler! After about 15 minutes of cross band operating the case was only slightly warm and not even enough to turn on the cooling fan. I'm cautiously optimistic so far. I think we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Anyway, just wanted to give you an initial report.'

This is a good start and hopefully all the technical specifications will be good as well. I'll pass along those comments when they arrive. Keep your fingers crossed but so far, so good.

Here's Ed's latest message from today, 10/4/15:

"After a week of testing, no problems could be found with the AT-5888UV III sample so I have told the factory they should begin production as soon as possible. My guess is they will begin right away. Here are comments from the testers:

They enlarged the case design some for additional components and it looks to be decent quality and good for heat reduction. I must say that I really like the looks of it! There is also now a speaker on top and bottom. Transmit audio on all bands is good, not overly loud like some Chinese radios, but a good crisp sound. Cross band repeat audio sounds good as well. Also to note is that the unit is running MUCH cooler than previous sample. After about 15 minutes of cross band operating the case was only slightly warm and not even enough to turn on the cooling fan. Hand mic is comfortable to use and easy to perform radio functions. Real world receive sensitivity is performing as good as my Kenwood TM-V71 and TYT TH-9000. We later tested sensitivity on an HP8935 and it passed with flying colors. I don't have my notes with me right now, but the numbers were very good. It's easy to program when using hand mic and face of rig. The removable head unit is nice and simple. The display is nicely customizable with red, green and blue together, for wide rage of color options. I feel this radio is a very good choice if someone is in the market for a tri band rig and is much cheaper priced than a used, out-dated Kenwood. A tri-band antenna (which I see you have) is a must for simplicity as there is only one antenna port. A tri-plexer could be used if someone wants individual antennas. Power output is 146 MHz (6, 11, 23 & 47 watts) / 223 MHz (6, 11, 15 & 24 watts) / 445 MHz (6, 10, 21 & 38 watts).

I can't tell you how excited I am to see this finally coming. I imagine we are all just as excited. This has been a long time coming. I'll email any updates I receive.

Ed's latest:

Happy Halloween,

"I'm sure hoping this will be the last update on the tri-band mobile. As you know from the last update, the sample radio seems to be working fine except for a couple things that were resolved via firmware tweaks. In mid-October, a decision was made to have the radio certified by me and OEM'ed in my brand name. There were several reasons for this decision, one being the problems caused by a company named Anytone-Tech. Anytone-China has not yet recovered from FCC certifications problems created by that Tech dealer.

The radio has been submitted to the lab for certification and I was told it could take two months for the process. I would love to put a Christmas bow on the first shipped radios and will if at all possible.

As you know, my last name is Griffin. A Griffin is a mythical beast with the body of a lion and the head, front legs and wings of an eagle. In Chinese, this is named Shi Ying or Lion Eagle. So the brand name is Shi Ying. Pronounced more like Su Ying. The model number will be SR-224 and if I do this correctly, and below is a sample of the logo.

Regards,
Ed"

Shi Ying SR-224 Formerly: AT-5888UV III Tri-Band - Update

Received an E-Mail from Ed G yesterday 12/22 on the progress of Part 90 Acceptance.
According to the manufacturer i.e. Anytone, they have one sample at the FCC lab going through
Part 90 Acceptance tests. They are expecting that it will be at least another month before they get results.

Also they have one test radio at their factory and are in the process of upgrading the radio's firmware.

What this means is unknown, perhaps equal power across all three bands.
As to adding crossband repeat from 1/1/4 meters 220Mhz to 2 meters 144Mhz this would require more than firmware but a major hardware board design.

Were now looking at a time line if Type acceptance is approved this radio will be available sometime in later January or February of 2016?

So the WAIT continues as we enter the 2nd year of actual waiting for this radio to be manufactured and released for sale. It is what it is

Ahhhh the wait goes on....:(

Tri-band Mobile AT-5888UV III NOW Shi Ying SR-224
Updates from Ed Griffin of Wouxan.us Communications

March 1, 2016

Well the past month or two have been very frustrating as far as the tri-band mobile goes. One half of the month of February was wasted while China celebrated their New Year holiday. Progress with certification has been a real hassle. The FCC changed all the rules beginning in June 2015. I am doing everything I can to get certification accomplished.

A final approval radio is supposed to be sent to me this Friday (but I've heard that before). If I approve it, the factory says they will meet my demand of "having radios to sell by May 1st".

I'll send an update if anymore information comes my way. Anyone wanting a refund at this point, just let me know.

3/1/2016

Right after hitting the send button on today's update, I got more news.

One thing I didn't mention before was that communications with Anytone has not been quite as good over the past two months. The person I have dealt with almost daily for the past five years, went on maternity leave. Her replacement was good enough but I never had the personal feel I'd had previously.

Over the past two weeks, I've been email chatting with my friend via her personal email. She is keeping up with work and just now updated me on the progress of the tri-band mobile. She tells me the engineer solved an audio concern of mine and wants me to approve a sample (this week). She says that certification is on track, that parts are waiting for assembly and delivery before my May deadline should not be a problem.

Hearing this from someone I trust, more that others, makes me feel much better. I'll let you know if the sample gets sent and will report its approval/disapproval.

Shi Ying SR-224 = Late March 2016 Update!

March 24, 2016
From the Wouxan.Us Website:

AnyTone AT-5888UV III Tri Band or Shi Ying SR-224

Certification for this radio will NOT be Part 90! (Amateur Only!)
(Recent FCC rules make it impossible to obtain Part 90 certification for an analog radio)

The final sample of this radio is being tested in the US and upon approval, factory production will begin by the end of March.

Tri-band Mobile Update

I am very happy to let everyone know that Anytone is in the process of producing this radio that you have waited so long for. After giving them the go-ahead about three weeks ago, I'd hoped they would be shipping by now. They have not given me an exact date and have only said, "the end of this month" (June). I don't know if this is an assembly date or a shipping date. Either way, something is actually happening,,,,,, finally.

I will email any news received as far as any specific dates they give.
As always, refunds are available for anyone not wanting to wait.

Regards,
Ed

AT-5888UV-III Latest Update from Ed at Wouxan,US

July 12, 2016

Guys,

Last night I asked Anytone for an update and received this reply:

Engineer solved the problem, now is in SMT processing, this week we will arrange assemble, but not sure if we can finish this week or not, as this is the first time (for multiple) assemble. I will keep you updated.

The problem referred to is whatever they ran into with the high-heat test. So it looks like they are in the process of final assemble. I will send another email if I hear any other news.

Ed

Latest Update from Ed G at Wouxan.US Tri-Band Mobile

8/4/2016

On Monday of this week, Anytone told me once again, "will try to ship this week". A statement I've heard each week for the past three or four. Well, I think they finally mean it this time.

I pressed them for verification last night and they say they have the first 100 pcs ready to ship. Usually shipping takes place on Friday or Monday so that's what I'm expecting this time. I will confirm that shipping has actually happened with another email, as soon as I get a tracking number.

A few people that will receive this email have not actually purchased a radio yet. For those few people, be advised that "supply is limited". At least 90 of these 100 radios have been spoken for. If you have been waiting to order, now may be the time. The second production run of this radio may be a few weeks away.

Another email update will follow when there's new news.

Regards,
Ed
