I'm having a problem with a zip file that I have attached to a message. Specifically, I have a zip file with a Google Earth .kmz and a .txt file in it. When I upload the file as an attachment, however, it seems as though the board is taking my zip and putting it into a second zip!

Those who are attempting to download the zip from the forum, then, are getting a zip inside of a zip. Some have been able to open the zip in a zip, while others are getting error messages about a corrupt zip file.

I am using the latest version of Winrar to make my zip file.

I'm not sure why this is happening now. When I originally posted my zip several months ago, hundreds of people downloaded the file without any problems. There was no zip inside of a zip. Now, it seems as though the forum software is taking my uploaded zip and placing it inside of a second zip.

My message, with attached zip, can be found here: http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82538

Try downloading the zip file. You'll see it is a zip inside of a zip. I did NOT compile it that way... My original zip file that I uploaded to the forum should contain two files - a .kmz and a .txt.

Any ideas? Is the forum software automatically putting my zip inside of a zip?

Me being real knowledgeable in IT and computers, WinRAR isn't the best software out there. This is actually just an opinion however. I use the free and in my opinion great 7z. WinZip is also a good commercial product I also happen to use, but I'm not here to advertise. Anyway, try bundling your package with 7z in a Zip format. 7z is free, and takes up very little space. Or - try WinZip. If you are using native Windows, you can even try Windows' built in zip packager.

Try one of those and see if it makes a difference. I've never had any issues with Zip files acting the way you state above. Maybe because I am using different software.

Let us know!

Also - is it just me, because I don't see an attached file in your post or the redirect link?

Yeah - I'll bet WinRAR is somehow doing something when Unzipping it. Works fine here too. Thanks Grog for that link too.

I remember having something like this happen before, but many years ago. I just used Windows to open it. I still use Windows for .zip formats, but all others use 7z. Some people have issues? I wonder if their OS is causing problems? The ones with issues opening the .zip, can they open other .zip attachments without problems?

Those that can't open the .zip may want to give a registry cleaner a shot. Maybe that's the problems. Could be a browser issue too..

Your master site
WinRAR isn't the best software out there.
For zipping files, no. For creating large single and multi-part RAR files it works great. RAR is the preferred format of the Usenet also.

Tried 7z, hate it. JMO though. I use whomever's software for their compression format. Less headaches.

Yup. Whatever for works in the situation and what you prefer works just fine for me. Just my opinion on software. Also, CCleaner is good. Haven't used that in a long time, but it works. Now back to the topic, we shall see if one of these issues helps solve his problem :).

Hmmmm, interesting.

Using WinRAR to create my zip, and then unzipping my zip works fine.....UNLESS it is my zip that I downloaded.

Also - I used WinRAR to make my original file (i.e. "version 1.0" of my Google Earth file), and hundreds downloaded it without any problems. Strange.

I'll try compiling my zip with a different program and see what happens. Thanks guys.

Ok, well, back to square one...

I've tried compiling my zip with WinRAR...downloaded zip appears as a zip within a zip.

I've tried compiling with Windows...downloaded zip appears as a zip within a zip.

I've tried compiling with 7zip...downloaded zip appears as a zip within a zip.

I've tried using all three to read the downloaded file each time as well...and it appears as a zip within a zip (or, as a "corrupted file").

For those of you who downloaded my zip off the forum - what unzipper did you use, and what OS are you using?

I have Windows XP, btw.......

I used the windows unzipper thingy with XP.

Can you unzip what I just uploaded? I unzipped yours (wow, that sounds bad) and rezipped it.

Grog, that one you just posted will not open with Windows XP's unzipper.

7zip shows it as a zip within a zip.

WinRar will not it open correctly.

EDIT - I should point out, too, that my local zip file will unzip just fine with all three unzippers. By local file, I mean my zip file that was created on my computer and not my zip file that came from the forums. It seems something gets changed when it's on the forum.......hmmmmm....

I'll log on from my work computer in a few minutes and try it over there to see if it works for me.

Weird in my opinion. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate and a Linux Distro. Seems to work OK for me. Try the attachment I will upload below. 1 second.

Just out of curiosity - try these two as well. One was made with 7Zip, and the other with WinZip 11.1 Pro.
