BC 396 Questions / Help Requested

Hello...

On the 996 by pressing the Function button in then pressing zero you get the Alpha Name on the screen, the frequency displays and the PL tone, Is there a way to do this on the BC 396 handheld scanner ?

Also I did some research on this and all I can find is some data back in 2005, What is the best handheld Antenna for the 396 ? The stock Antenna just doesn't cut it, I am looking for something under 10 inches in length. please provide vendor info for the antenna.

The experts would know more than me but I believe the 396 does not have this option. This is one of the issues that I don't like about my 396. On the 996 in mode 2, I can see the frequency along with the alpha display. With the 396, it's NFM or what ever on the third line. The second line is either freq or alpha on the 396.

What is the best handheld Antenna for the 396 ?

It depends what you are listening to and who you ask. Everyone will have their own opinion as to what the "best" antenna is. Radio Shack's 800mhz handheld antenna works pretty good (in my opinion) but it is specifically tuned for 800mhz, If you are listening to other bands, you may want to get different antennas for each. Try looking in the antenna forum, antennas for the 396 have been discussed many times in there.

I don't know of any way to get your 396 to do what you would like it to on the scanner screen. You can use external software like what the Butel folks produce and look at the info you're talking about on a spreadsheet on your computer. Have you tried that?
