totally new to scanners. have a BC796D.. some questions to get me started..

did I do the right thing getting a 796D ??

Now for the questions: (live in San Antonio, Tx.)

The San Antonio Police Dept/city seems to use the EDACS "networked" and is not using the ESK key ??? anyway - how in the hell can I get this massive system setup??

How about Texas "state" DPS police??

Or - I would love to setup Dallas area since I go there??

Or - even something as simple as Big Bend Border Patrol/IMS

Where to go for help in programming the Uniden 796D

Just bought a 796D and live in Austin, TX. Need some help to get the thing to work. Only thing I can hear so far is the NOAA weather station. Seems like the Police Dept in Austin has just gone digital. Would like to know if there is help anywhere to get the thing up and running. I have tried several things listed in the manual without success. Thanks for any help or guideance.

Click on the RR Database link at the top of the site and choose texas and then choose the county you want info on and you'll be able to determin if you can listen to them or not.

The 796 will scan EDACS trunked systems as long as the users aren't using "PROVOICE" on the system. Provoice is M/A-Com's version of digital. No scanner is capable of monitoring a provoice transmission (yet). However usually even if a system has provoice on it doesn't mean every agency who uses that EDACS system will be provoice. And you'll be able to monitor the analog agencies. The scanner you have is the most latest digital capable scanner on the market. There isn't anything else that tops it. I have the 785d with the digital card. It's a great scanner.

I'm currently using mine to listen to a motorola digital trunked system and an edacs system, which happen to be used as my ONLINE SCANNER. With the 796 you'll be able to scan anything conventional and trunked as long as its not "EDACS provoice."

So check out the database on here and find out what systems are in your areas of interest. And like the other person suggested, get on the texas forum, I hang out on the MS forum and we share a lot of information about my area there.
