I have done that with the BCD325P2, but the extra bulk is not very portable. I have been looking through several on Amazon trying to find something thin and no bigger than the outer dimensions of the scanner. Then, there is the cabling bulk.
I can put the 325p2 and the external usb battery with the cable into an army ammo pouch. Fits perfectly.

Accurate readings now.

Idle, no backlight. 208 mA

Received signal, full volume, no backlight 221-240 mA.

Backlight current draw above idle.

Low 7 mA
Mid 14 mA
High 33 mA

Leaving backlight on all the time set to Mid works well. Just wish they didn't have the wild ass idea to tint the window.

Performance wise, this thing receives everything it is supposed to very well so far. Good audio. Easy to program and operate. Very versatile customization. Virtually no birdies with antenna disconnected. Almost all remedied using IFX. I am not currently in a hostile RF environment at home, so cannot comment yet on IMD or image rejection. I suspect it will do well, as it is not picking up the usual noise makers in the house, except an occasional clean signal when searching, that goes away when removing the antenna.
