OFDM, that is correct, you are wrong in your thinking in this regards. whsbuss is correct. If plugged into USB power, then USB power is used to operate it while turned on.
As we who? I ran Motos with drop in's for years. Had several with remote mikes that NEVER left the charger. Maybe not supposed to, but my batwing dealer never said never.
And if you can't charge the 436 and listen at the same time- don't want one.

If the scanner is powered off and I connect USB power, it says charge Y/N. Regardless of Y/N, if I now power on the scanner, it powers up, loads the favorates list then prompts again "USB Cable Detected, select mass storage or serial".
Seems you have to use "serial" for it to continue past and start scanning. There is no UI indication that it's being powered by USB.
So I guess it will work, it's just a clunky UI and poor user experience.

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear in my posting. I don't care about charging the batteries, I want to be able to operate the radio for a continuous period and was asking if it was possible.
Well you can't charge the 436 while it's on, that's a fact. It will operate off of the power, though, if connected and on.
And yes, we've always been told here to never have the radio on while in the charger - it reduces the life of the battery is all, when draining it and trying to charge it at the same time, but still...that's enough reason for me to comply. (The Motorola user guide states this, actually.) But this thread isn't about that and I believe the question about the 436 has now been answered.

So I have a question regarding this.. If I leave it plugged up USB to my computer, does it monitor the charge and stop charging when batt is 100%? Another question is, the first 50 hrs to charge internal clock backup...when I first get it and I desire to do so, can I just leave it plugged up to the computer for the whole 50 hrs and it charge the internal clock, and not worry about the process stopping if the batteries charge first. Or is internal clock a separate deal? Sorry if this has been addressed, just wanted to ask while we are discussing batts. Thanks!

annoying audio mute when pressing hold
Sorry if this sounds trivial but one of the biggest annoyances using the HP is the audio briefly muting when I hold a service or department. I have key beeps off, I assume the mute is where the key beep should be if I had it on, either way, it interrupts the audio enough to be annoying.
For example, with key beep off (don't know who on earth likes key beeps anyways) on my 436, if I hear something interesting on a particular TG and it's active (i.e. the dispatcher is saying an address) and I hit the white "CHAN" button to hold that channel, the audio is muted for perhaps 2 seconds then returns. No big deal but it's annoying that in the 2 seconds the dispatcher completes the address and I totally missed it.

There is no way to monitor the charge state of NiMH batteries charged in series. The charger is strictly a timed charger. The internal clock back-up battery is independent of the main AA batteries.

In Sentinel go to Edit>Edit Profiles>Service Types> then check Multi-Dispatch then upload it to the scanner
What exactly does this do?
It enables those channels that have the "Multi-Dispatch" service tag for scanning, if they are otherwise selected (range, QK, lockout status, etc).
If you press the knob and take a look at the voltage, it will be slightly higher with the USB plugged in to power than without. This tells me that the USB is in fact providing voltage to the scanner.

Are you wanting to cycle your batteries in and out of the scanner and use the scanner as your battery charger?
Personally, I have always used a good external battery charger that charges EACH battery to the extend that it needs it and it was often said that they were faster and safer (if a battery cell should short out it will take your $40 charger with it not your $600 radio).
However, I have also read that the x36HP radios will shut off the charge cycle if they start to overheat, so Uniden may have addressed this problem (when one or more of the batteries "short out"). In addition, I have read in several places that the faster you charge your batteries the shorter their life span will be. Therefore, Uniden's "trickle" charge approach may actually help your batteries last longer, although some external charges apparently also have a "trickle" charge option.
I keep several changes of batteries for my portable scanners that are segregated with respect to how many full charge cycles they have had (it is important to run the battery down to a certain point before recharging if you want to get the longest life out of the battery).
Therefore, I think you will need to cycle your batteries and keep track of how discharged they are before recharging them regardless if you can charge them while listening to the radio or not. Of course if you use your radio every day a predictable amount you may know when the batteries need to be recharged.
I also keep regular non-rechargeable batteries around since I have lived in tornado alley and in blizzard country and major events can last several days.
Most (maybe even all) of the Multi-Dispatch channels I've seen in the RRDB are on conventional channels.

How do I adjust volume while playing back discovery hits?
Sounds like a simple question, probably is but I can't figure it out.
I did a conventional discovery run, I went in to replay the hits and I can't seem to adjust the volume while its playing back.
Another feature request (unless it's there and I cant figure it out), while playing back a hit, can you make the 4(<) and 6(>) key or the rotary knob go to the next or previous hit while playing back? Otherwise I have to go back to levels and select the next one and hit ok 2 times before the next one plays.

Just got my 436, this was well worth the money I would have spent on the wife's Christmas gifts. Great job Uniden and great job to Hamstation, ordering and delivery went perfect. Very Happy am I.

You bought yourself a scanner instead of stuff for your wife and she's OK with that? Sounds like she's a keeper.
Meanwhile, everyone who ordered their 436 from Scanner Master is still waiting.... and waiting.... and waiting... I'm about ready to get in the car and drive to Boston at this rate.
