Set Serial Port (996XT)/Set GPS Baud Rate (996P2) allows you to set the baud rate for the front and rear serial ports. You typically set the front port to match the speed used to communicate with your PC (default 115200 bps) and the backport to the speed used to communicate with an attached GPS device (default 4800 bps). Note that the backport is male. You may need a gender changer and a null modem adapter to use a typical DB9 serial cable from the rear port.

Scroll to 'Set Serial Port/Set GPS Baud Rate' and press E/●.
At 'Set Baud Rate' press E/●.

Scroll to 'Set Front Port' and press E/●.

Scroll to Off, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, or 115200 and press E/● to save and exit.

Scroll to 'Set Rear Port' and press E/●.

Scroll to Off, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, or 115200 and press E/● to save and exit.

Press MENU twice to return.

I run 10 pro 64 with no driver problems
I have the same 10 pro 64. The scanner worked fine on this setup for a couple of years, then one day I lost communications with the computer, I even tried connecting to my other computer with the same error. This is why I feel it is the cable or the port itself.

Here's the error that I keep getting Device Descriptor Request Failed this appears the minute I turn my scanner on. I did remove the driver and installed the Uniden driver.

Googling "device descriptor request failed" comes up with lots of fixes.

The older 996 series of scanners used the Uniden USB cable with small rectangular plug. The 996P2 uses the USB mini B cable. It works with standard Windows drivers.
No reason why the port couldn't have failed. I would suggest trying to find someone else in the area with that radio and have them try to read it. If they can, have them bump up the firmware. If they can't, you need to decide if it is worth nearly $100 to fix it.
I might try to reseat that ribbon cable inside the radio first as you said it was out of warranty.
If you could Ebay or otherwise sell it and get $200 for it, that plus the $100 would put you pretty close to a new one. Just another option.

Thanks, you all, I'm going to see if the scanner will work on one of my Windows 7 computers. Will let you all know how this turns out. Wife is having a major operation next week, so will not be able to do much for awhile, leaving for Huston Monday morning. You all are a great bunch
