Mine charges to 4.20 volts but when I unplug it and turn it on it goes from 4.20 volts to 4.12 volts? Is this normal?

Mine does about the same thing. The battery is then under a load.

Why don't I have the full 4.20 after I unplug it?

You might if you put a voltmeter on the battery. When you're reading the voltage on the screen, the battery is under load.

That’s probably fine. Mine was fully charged a few hours ago and I just unplugged the charger and it bounced from 4.10-4.11. I’m guessing that once it charges the charging circuit turns off and then the scanner starts to draw some minimal power which could reduce the voltage just a little. I suspect if you sat and waited until the led went green and immediately checked the voltage it could possibly be a little higher than after it sits for a while.

All those numbers are fine under those circumstances.

And remember, if you have enough amperage going in, you can run the scanner and charge it at the same time. I use a 3A "wall wart" figuring it's probably really only about 2.5A. I recently made an 1800 mile trip with the Globalsat GPS antenna hooked to the SDS100. First, it performed flawlessly but second, there was enough amperage coming from the cigarette lighter plug to both run the GPS and keep the battery charged. The USB plug uses different contacts for voltage and data and it worked like a charm.

Is the 2 amp charger included with the scanner considered inadequate?

I would say so. I tried my Anker charger which works great with phones, iPads and portable batteries buy it actually seems like the factory charger charges it in less time. The Anker may be a little easier on the battery but I suspect the little bit of a difference is not a big deal either way.

I will say that I’ve never tried to run the SDS100 from a fully discharged state and connect it to the factory charger and listen to the radio all day while it’s charging. It would be easy enough to put one of those little USB current meters on to see what the charging rate and additional current draw would be while it’s charging and playing. I just haven’t tried that yet. I can do that unless someone beats me to it to post the resaults.

2A is adequate. The problem is most chargers are probably not what they advertise or what is shown on the label. They're not off by a lot but with amperage as low as 2A, ½A could make a difference. That's why my chargers are all 3A.

Having said that, the charger that came with the SDS100 seems to work just fine.

I s'pose it'll work but it looks like a bit of an overkill with all those outlets. It says 2.5 amps and, on it's face, that's plenty but some manufacturers tend to overstate some of the specs.

By the same token, I think Anker is Amazon's brand but I've found it to be pretty decent quality. Try it. If you don't like it, Amazon will take it back and you can revert to the plain ole wall wart.

I can use the extra ports so that’s why I went with the 4 port model. Thanks, I’ll give it a try and see if it will help charge a little better while in use.
