With Boston College going P-25 and encrypted were they eligible to receive any of the new radios under the Boston UASI grant or was that just for towns and cities.

One reason why many colleges/universities are going encrypted is that one of the university professional groups that they belong to recommends use of encrypted communications for university PD's and security staffs as a result of their study of the college killings that have happened in recent years. I haven't read the entire report but apparently the thinking is that they don't want the perps to be able to monitor the PD response to such incidents.

I read the report on the Virginia Tech massacre. Everyone should read it. The kid (shooter) didnt talk to anyone except his sister for approx 20 years. This self imposed silence followed open heart surgery when he was 2 years old. (The report should be still available on the Virginia Tech website). You can see how little effort it took to render the University Police totally ineffective. (The shooter did not have a scanner).

In general, Campus Police can do very little to prevent mayhem. I wont go into any details here.

Boston PD and Boston Transit PD recently decided not to issue more assault rifles to police officers. because it is seen as leading to an escalation of violence. And I see encryption as leading to an escalation of violence. Check out "death squads" at Wikipedia. Police are mentioned several times. Clearly, not all police are bad. But just a couple of bad police with encrypted radios and assault rifles would be a disaster.

Seems that BCPD is no longer using encryption. They are still using P25 modulation however. Peter Sz Jan 12 2011

Today - 28 November 2011

472.1375 - NAC 365 - encrypted - FCC ULS shows this to be Boston College

472.1625 - NAC 671 - clear - FCC ULS shows this licensed to the City of Boston but with the repeater at 765 Commonwealth Ave (which I think is the highrise on the Boston University campus) - very little radio traffic in the last half hour - I think I heard Car 761 mentioned

Yup - 472.1625 R is BU PD - they just assisted Brookline PD in busting three shoplifters near Kenmore Square - all BU PD comms are in the clear - Units heard were - 500, 596, 595 - "Control" is the dispatcher - they have MDTs and can receive Email messages from the dispatcher ('Bulletin Board'?)
