as reported elsware in the forum, only the pd is going digital. the fd is staying analog, so the system upgrade will be 3600 baud digital (mixed mode). i have not listened to the system lately, but i have heard that alot of upgrades were being performed as of june 1. the original plan was to go digital as of may 1-of course that has not happened.

hope this helps bill simpson

Bristol going digital

According to a friend who is a BPD officer, the latest target for the transition to digital was in the month of July.

This clearly hasn't happened.

I suppose we'll listen-in one day in the near future and be surprised.

Bristol going digital -- Update

According to a friend on the Bristol PD, the new target date for the switch to digital is October.

The plan is for all officers to be issued their own "personal" portable with their ID programed. They will be issued charging devices (drop-in's, I believe), which they can use at home. They can also charge from the lighter plug socket. Apparently, the current arrangement (a pool of shared portables) left officers with portables which were, at times, not fully charged and could not be charged from a lighter plug. Officers would have to resort to using the mobile radio in their cruiser at M/V stops, accident scenes, etc. The worst case scenario of a foot chase of a suspect and a dead portable is a possibility with the current arrangement. The new plan will give officers more control and flexibility.

The current equipment will be "handed-down" to the Bristol FD.

Bristol changed over at 1000hrs today. PD is digital & encrypted. They had a dispatch console that was in the clear but I haven't seen that one in a while.
FD & EMS still analog and unencrypted.

PD is using 32xxx talkgroups

I noticed last night from my driveway in Cheshire, since the upgrade, I can now receive Bristol's trunk system. The control channel is fairly strong, but the voice channels are much weaker. At first I wasn’t positive it was actually them, but shortly after confirmed when I heard the PD’s encrypted transmissions and recognized their talk group. Yes,. Milford, Wilton, Bristol, Wallingford at times, who's next? Not Cheshire I hope...... Seems like it's becoming fairly common during upgrades or new system installs. I had hoped to never hear of full time encryption, just maybe encrypted detective or tactical operations. I posed the question to Uniden as far as attacking encryption in future scanner models and they came back with "In the future I am sure it will be possible. Right now we do not have any information about it." As difficult as it would be, that response actually sounded half positive, but then again who knows.

Is it not illegal in the US and many other Countries to listen to Encrypted Transmissions on a Scanner?

Its not illegal to listen to encrypted transmissions, you can't understand them anyway. It is illegal to try to deencrypt them though.

so why would Uniden have a scanner in the works for the far Future to De-Encrypt Frequencies?

Also on another Offtopic Question, is it illegal to possess a Un-Blocked Scanner? that RX's Every band?

Not illegal to own, but may be illegal to listen to certain bands, i.e. cellular and cordless telephone.

i believe that ct. state police will be encrypted sooner than we think....if anyone has been monitoring and realizing....iv picked up encrypted transmissions , basically the radio techs. s on some ....but about 3 days ago i picked them up on the i-calls (private calls) and it was encrypted ...i really belive they will be encrypted full time by next year 2006 . the radio techs seem to be playing with it a lot if no ones listened ...and i think its gearing twords full time encryption for the future...if i sound redundent , im just in amazement that iv spent almost 600.00 on a digital scanner , that was primarily to listen to ct. state pd .. and why buy the 2096 scanner if you cant get the encrypted signals anyway.??? i believe we'll never see a scanner able to decode encrypted freqs. , or talkgroups....your talking secret service , FBI, and other sensitive intelligence agencies....NO WAY ...just my opinion ...as much as i would love to ...im trying to be realistic. (and i dont mean radio schack) !

and while im at it , i can see very sensitve talk groups being encrypted ....but just the dispatch channels and car to car ....no ......i keep the scanner with me in the car every day(250-D) and when i get on the highway 91 south from springfield to hartford i only keep MA.state police and CT. state police on line on the scanner...and its saved me more than once listening to the Tractor Trailers over turned on the highway , and i already know my route that im going to take at 4:30a and 6:00am in the morning , and this before all the traffic helocopters from am and fm radio stations are up and on the air.....it does come in handy...but dont leave us in the dark with full time encryption!! :( please??? :(
