Governor Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on Wildfires in Southern California

Governor Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement in response to wildfires in Southern California, including the Canyon Fire that has burned more than 800 acres in Los Angeles County near Malibu Canyon. The Canyon Fire is being driven by strong winds and so far has burned 4 homes, a church and 3 buildings. It has also caused power outages in areas along the coast near Malibu. Pepperdine University and the community of Piuma Canyon have been evacuated.

"Currently there are a number of fires in Southern California, being driven by strong Santa Ana winds, which have destroyed several homes. In Los Angeles County, the Canyon Fire has burned several hundred acres so far and poses a serious threat to nearby communities. My administration is working closely with federal and local officials; we will continue to mobilize the necessary resources to fight all of these fires," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "I am continuously receiving briefings on the situation and have committed to sending additional personnel and equipment, if needed, as well as setting up evacuation centers to help those who have been displaced from their homes. I commend those individuals who have acted quickly to evacuate from the dangerous areas, for the safety of themselves and their families."

To fight the Canyon Fire, Cal Fire strike team engines and aircraft have been deployed. The Governor's Office of Emergency Services has also sent fire engines to assist local government. The federal government and County and City of Los Angeles are also providing resources. At least 400 state, local and federal fire engines are on the scene or being dispatched. Ten Cal Fire S2-T air tankers are engaged or ready to be deployed. So far, more than 1150 personnel have been assigned to respond to the situation.

The State is also actively monitoring and sending resources to the Ranch Fire and Session Fires in Los Angeles County as well as the Sedgewick Fire in Santa Barbara County and the El Cajon Fire in San Diego.

FEMA ANNOUNCES FIRE MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE GRANT
FOR CANYON FIRE

Oakland— The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help California fight the Canyon wildfire, located in the Malibu Canyon south of the Pacific Coast Highway.

The Canyon Fire, which began at about 5:00 a.m. this morning, is burning over 1000 acres in heavy six foot brush in a south west direction in Los Angeles County. At the time federal funds were requested, five homes and two churches were destroyed, and power outages had occurred over a large area along the Malibu Coast.

FEMA Region IX Administrator Nancy Ward said that approval of the request for federal fire management assistance came within two hours after the state’s call for aid last night. There is poor vehicular access to the fire due to narrow roads and evacuee traffic. "FEMA stands ready to support our state and local partners through this difficult situation," said Ward.
The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires.
Federal fire management assistance is provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and is made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible state firefighting costs covered by the aid must first meet a minimum threshold for costs before assistance is provided. Eligible costs covered by the aid can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.

Im very surprised a State of Emergency hasn't been issued.
The Governor is keeping an eye on it, and his OES is providing resources, along with everyone else: http://gov.ca.gov/index.php?/press-release/7786/

Generally, the Governor can't make the declaration until he is "requested to do so by the mayor or chief executive of a city or chairman of the board of supervisors or a county administrative officer. It is OES policy that a formal request be submitted through OES for the Governor to proclaim a state of emergency. Such a request will be in written form, but may be preceded by a verbal request..." per http://www.oes.ca.gov/Operational/OESHome.nsf/PDF/California Emergency Plan/$file/CEP-05.pdf

Look at this incident, Imagine if it was a terrorist attack, or the major earthquake. We'd be in trouble.
