I dug out of my box of scanners a UBC780XLT that I am using for some paging monitoring. I went to the Butel site and downloaded the ARC780 program, installed it on my Windows 11 PC and on excuting the program start, got a message the black window of death, "This app can not run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, contact the software publisher"

I have sent an email to Butel, nil reply so far. I am believing it will have something to do with the OS Windows 11. Anyone else experienced the same problem? I have tried the compatability fixes, trying with Windows 8 , but same result.

Did you read this on the Butel website…..

IMPORTANT: support for this product has ended. Software will only run on Windows XP. IMPORTANT: this software is now sold 'as is'. This software will not be updated anymore. Please try the demo BEFORE purchasing a license for this software. ARC780 is written in an older development language and only supports short 8 character filenames! > ARC780 is NOT compatible with Windows Vista/7/8.

It works in a VM just fine, if you have the access to the install media - and some competence you can be on the road in under an hour.

As you are "just doing some paging monitoring" - I would think that the amount of frequencies and data entered isn't that much, and could be done by the front panel. Stinks, but I think the workload of spinning up a VM (or aquiring hardware & building a legacy system) isn't commensurate with the amount of programming time you'll actually save w/ data entry by the software.

I've recently tried the "demo version" of ProScan (ver: 18.3) for my newly acquired Uniden BC780XLT and it appears to function nicely with Windows 10 and this radio. After a little more experimentation with the software I think I will obtain a registration number for it.

And bingo!!!!! After helping Bob with testing 18.3, the pay off, SDS100 working nicely with 18.3 :):) Mind you I am using ARC560 18.3, in that program you have the option of which SDS you want to use, a 100 or 200 .

From what I can tell, ProScan 18.3 appears to have the ability to program/control my BCD486HP, BCD586HP, SDS200... and BC780XLT... as well as several other Uniden scanners that I don't have. "Bob" emailed me and confirmed that only one registration is required to run the software on all of the radios listed in the software's pull down menu. So far I've only tried it on my BC780XLT and SDS200 with good results. The reason I looked into ProScan was to gain the ability to program my BC780XLT via my computer as compared to pushing button on the face of the scanner.

I run one of the Tucson LiveATC.Net receiver stations. For that I use a Uniden BC 780XL.
I also haven't used Windows in 25 years.

The Butel ARC780 software works almost flawlessly under WINE on Linux.
- I had to map the /dev/ttyUSB0 to COM1: (Sure, it doesn't support USB under Windows, but it sure does on Linux+WINE)
- I have to re-enter the registration code each time as it doesn't seem to save it.

WINE works on Windows as well so if you're on a Windows-64 system or something that ARC780 doesn't natively support, install WINE (it's Freen and Open Source Software) and have a good time.

Linkie to how to map /dev/ttyUSB0 to COM1:

P.S. If anyone knows how to make ARC780 permanently store the key, that would be advice I'd love to get.
However, for the 2-3 times I year I fire it up to add/remove a frequency, it is a minor hassle. Proscan works
as well, but is way overkill for what I want... even though it supports my 436HP (now SDS100).
