The system will provide coverage for TTC's operational area in greater Toronto, and will be the first TETRA network deployed by a transport organization in Canada - enabling TTC to enjoy the benefits TETRA has already brought to the transportation sector around the world. im assuming this system isn't monitorable, and where is the TTC getting the coin for this when they are always crying broke?

Wiki says there are open source programs which will allow you to monitor if they are not using encryption.

Tetra is able to be run in encrypted or un-encrypted mode.

The TTC is always crying broke yes - but this upgrade is part of a bigger project - automatic train operation. They need a reliable network with data capabilities in order to make this work. TETRA fits the bill perfectly.

Currently, they run four networks:
-5 channel UHF conventional system for supervisors, enforcement, maintenance
-custom full-duplex UHF radio system for streetcars and busses
-MPT1327 UHF trunked system for subways
-2 chanel UHF conventional system for the Scarborough RT

All of which have been on life support for a number of years. It's a good time to take a look at a global replacement.
