I wanted to drive down Mulholland this week to check things out, but I forgot. I'm betting it isn't going to be that big a deal.

So they are just returning to pre brownout staffing for the weekend?

It is worse than "brown out" for LAFD, they have done a redeployment of resources. Some task force have been been split into truck only or engine only stations. More RA and 800 BLS units have been put into service.

ABC7 showed some BLS paramedics at Station 88 that will use LAPD Dirt Bikes to respond if needed.

Anyone know the call sign? BLS 88? Bike 88?

Carmageddon frequencies

On the Southern California Monitoring Association website there is a two page sheet with possible frequencies for active to monitor. LAPD has "Tactical Command Posts" in downtown, Rancho Park (WLA) and in the valley near fire station 88. Also they plan to use the citywide tacticals 1-7 keeping the bureau tacticals open for the division. Check out the SCMA site at: Southern California Monitoring Association

"If I ruled the world," we could've turned this closure into a "what will you do after a 7.0 and the freeway is destroyed" earthquake prep exercise to show people that it's okay to take surface streets. :) Have a safe weekend, everybody!

Carmageddon frequencies...west l.a.

You can find some frequencies for "Carmageddon" on the SCMA website. Also LAPD is using the Citywide Tactical channels 1-7 keeping the Bureau Tacticals open for the Divisions to use. Check out the two-sheets on frequencies at: Southern California Monitoring Association, they may be of some use to some of you.
SORRY FOR THE RE-POST...Rick.

I put in those freqs for the contractor, but haven't heard anything. I'm wondering if CalTrans has a dedicated channel they're using. I'm too lazy to check them all.

Fox has a live cam on their site if anybody wants to watch. The demo should be interesting. I noticed some high reach shears out there, so I guess they'll go from the bottom up.

Is the NAME the problem rather than the use?

I just got an email from the admin, regarding this, you cannot broadcast tacticals
It's unfortunate that either LAPD didn't rename the frequencies for this event, or that the RadioReference rules prohibiting broadcast of frequencies with the word "tactical" in their name don't take into account the use of the frequencies.

Or at least that RR can't provide for exceptions in situations such as this. In actuality Channels 44-49 and 177 will be used this weekend primarily as supplemental dispatch and sitstat frequencies for the planned unusual occurrence, taking the expected load off the regular dispatch frequencies and dispatchers. Some of the frequencies will use the civilian dispatchers (PSRs), and others will have sworn personnel doing it, but they're essentially receiving reports by radio and telephone of incidents requiring police attention, and then dispatching and coordinating their response. Just like they do on the "base" frequencies (which are NOT called "dispatch" frequencies at LAPD, by the way). Are "base" frequencies allowed to be streamed, I wonder?

But very clear reception from the north valley, so it's no skin off my nose either way. Either it's only now just beginning, or else, hopefully, it will end up being a terrific success in the sense that the weeks of warnings and suggestions are heeded by the public and it's just a normal weekend, other than no I-405 being available. Back to my scanner.

Nobody is missing much. I've barely heard them make three calls since they started making the closures. They had their plan for months, so there's not much to talk about at this point.

I hadn't heard that message, but clearly several of the frequencies were still unrestricted as of an hour or so ago. And there was at least one broadcast to the effect that one or more of the frequencies were going to have sworn officers rather than PSRs staffing them overnight. That may work out just fine, as long as they don't have to use the dispatch consoles and software, can use paper and pencils, and don't have to do much unaccustomed multitasking :)

Just like the 84 Olympics, when we were ready for whatever was thrown our way, but it turned out to be almost nothing. Communications had slightly beefed up staffing, but it turned out to be completely unnecessary. Come to think of it, their workload was less than normal, as all radio calls related to or near any Olympics venues were routed to and dispatched from the Command Posts on, pardon the expression, Tac frequencies.

Watch the destruction live

If you are out of local or cable TV coverage of this thing there is a live video as well as an every-15-seconds still pic stream online at I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project | July 16-17 Live Feed

You may need MS Silverlight to view the video, it's linked on the page. Still looks like a little traffic getting through northbound, but everything I'm seeing southbound has flashing lights.

Still a few stragglers on the northbound, but they already have stuff rolled out on the other side.

Yeah, like I've said... I doubt things will be that bad. The canyons will probably be pretty loaded up. But whoever gets caught up in it, was going to get caught up in it no matter what.

Here is part of LAFD's press release from their blog
LAFD to Debut Motorcycle Response Teams as Pilot Program During I-405 Closure

Our (LAFD's) continuous efforts to maintain high standards of service and lower response times, challenge us to be both innovative and consistent. To that end, the LAFD has developed a unique response team for these locations, that will make its debut this weekend. Motorcycle Response Teams ("Motor Teams") will be deployed at two different locations (Fire Stations 99 & 109) to enhance our service to these affected areas.

Riding Kawasaki KLX 650 motorcycles (kindly on-loan for the weekend from our friends at Kawasaki Motor Corp.), our Firefighter/EMTs will have the ability to more easily move through traffic enroute to an emergency incident. A two-member team (one team = two motorcycles, each with one Firefighter/EMT) will be strategically placed on both the East and West sides of the I-405 freeway. These teams will also patrol their assigned areas, providing up-to-the-minute intelligence on access and egress issues, as well as continuous monitoring of alternate response routes.

Upon an emergency or medical incident, the Motor Team will take appropriate action in managing the incident and rendering basic medical care, as necessary. The Teams offer our response, safe and quick maneuverability, flexibility and the opportunity to render continuous care until a patient is transferred to another LAFD resource for transport. These motorcycles are not equipped with lights or sirens and therefore, will respond with caution.

It should be noted, this is a "pilot program" only and may or may not be continued, based largely on the success of the program over this weekend.
