So for G7 the CFD added a couple new units to the fleet for the duration of the event and fully staffed, TRS10, TRS11, POD1, & POD2.

The temp units were:
Engine 324 (HazMat Engine, ran out of 24)
Engine 402 (TR Engine, ran out of 2)
HazMat 14
DC7
MRU16

These units are no longer active as G7 is now over.

I was really hoping Engine 324 was a permeant extra Engine. Hopefully Engines 341 and 340 are still going to happen and be in service before the new year

The stock Engine is exactly what I expected it to look like. Since it's stock CFD had 0 say in how it looked since it was already sitting there on the shelf.

An Enforcer with a side mount pump and a 750 gal tank was expected.

Since the other 3 are stock they will most likely look different in some way, wether it's the chassis, GPM, tank size or something else.

I can't wait to see where these Engines end up.

Tower 31 is OOS for the 2nd time this summer.
This means Bush Buggy 31 is running in it's place now since all the reserves are being used.

When this happened with Station 23 in 2023 it was easier to manage as Ladder 1 & Tower 25 were both able to make the runs there pretty quickly.

It's a little more complicated for 31 as either Ladder 32 or Ladder 34 have to make the run and both take 15+ minutes to get to 31s district. 31 is filled with densely packed suburban communities making fires easy to spread.

This happens every summer, it's only a matter of time before it results in disaster. Might be time to lease some stock aerials.

Even though this should never happen, it’s sadly expected in Calgary, even sadder to see. Obviously a reoccurring issue every single year in the Ladder fleet. This year though it’s getting more spot light because the fire union is using more social media.

This (of course) comes back to planning - planning for trucks and planning for having the right parts, if the shops can stock them. Sometimes sadly though even the best plans fail.

In a situation like this, would it be better to move 25 tower to 31? It’s not an ideal situation at all, either way fire response is affected, but life hazard/population wise would that make sense?

I highly doubt we will see more stock ladders added to fleet. If anything I could see with the new 4 ladders coming - 2 being added as new units and 2 being used as replacements to the fleet. Unfortunately with the cost of everything CFD didn’t before and currently doesn’t have the money to purchase more ladders. The Chief even said that about new Engines

Does anyone know call volumes for ladders in the city? Is 31 and 25 the slowest?

In the coming years it will be interesting to see what the shops look like with the number of spares. They might need a new storage building 😅

Tower 31 being in the BB likely means there are not enough spare Engines available either

Ladders and Tower Ladders in the city go as follows:
-Ladder 01
-Ladder 06
-Ladder 32
-Ladder 17
-Ladder 12
-Ladder 08
-Tower Ladder 19
-Ladder 30
-Tower Ladder 31
-Ladder 34
-Tower Ladder 25

The big issue with 25 is it's the only district that actually needs a Tower. The others are beneficial, but to have a Tower on scene of an Industrial fire, like a warehouse, is extremely important. The ability to fight the fire is much easier with a platform in general.

But specifically, the apparatus needs to be close by, as larger buildings often need more supply/attack lines, more apparatus and more people. This will all result in obstacles to get an Aerial in a proper position. It would almost make more sense to bump L34 to 40 for the time being.

So much going on… the news about station 3 is disappointing, I expect the city will have find land somewhere in Inglewood and build a hall there. The purposed site has been in and out of the news, businesses complaining about the loss of parking and so fourth.

The first of the new Engines was kinda surprising and not. I like the paint job. It looks like a pretty standard side mount Engine. I recall talking with a Captain from 43, and asking him how he felt about their 2010 rig. He simply said, it gets us to where we need to be. It’s pretty clear that CFD has a real issue with spares and particularly ladders.

This problem isn’t going to get any easier with this huge REV group buying up the bulk of manufacturing. We are seeing the results of this across the board. Look at the struggles LAFD are having with replacement rigs and parts. Every big city FD is going to be in for a rough ride across North America.

I love the idea of EMS based fire. PCP’s on engines, fantastic! Calgary used to have one of the best EMS services in North America, and then the province decided to implement there province wide EMS with a central dispatch in Edmonton. I’m not a fan, Red Deer and Lethbridge held on to their fire and EMS which is great!

Calgary could do it if the political will existed. It would probably take a few years to sort out, but it could be done. It would probably benefit the city. CFD could repurpose there FRP’s into some sort of rehab units. The firefighters that want to be PCP’s would have to attend paramedic school, probably get paid more being both, some folks would just be in the EMS program, some others would remain firefighters with the EMR status. Basically the members that hold both professions if you will would be assigned to enhanced engines. (Paramedic Engines or Squads) that word again. It would really raise the level of service to the community and probably bring back some former glory. The LAFD system would be a great model.

E311 was a bit of a surprise, personally I’d like to see 11 become a mirror of 12, two engines and a ladder and move the rescue and wood wagon to 16. This would take pressure off L1.

What is a triple combination pumper?

I looked on the City website and lo and behold, the Inglewood project is on hold at the second to last step before breaking ground.

The site is full of some really great information and concept art. The apron is off 11 Ave SE. the building itself looks very cool, kinda contemporary modern vibe. It looks like a ton of money has gone into this study and proposal. It’s probably bogged down in the public engagement step. If you read the link, it’s very informative.
