What if chester county switches to P25 Digital but they cant cover parts of the rural areas of Chester Co? Also, does chester county have any coverage problems in rural parts of chester county? Why didnt they go with maybe an 500 Mhz conventional or trunked system since DelCo uses a 500mhz system? 800 MHz is very line of sight and chester county is a pretty large county.
I think I might be able to understand why 800 Mhz. With the terrain so mountainous, the 800 signal is probably able to penetrate that better than a 500 Mhz signal. It's the same reason why major cities with tall buildings go 800. I've been through Chester County on the PA turnpike on the way to Lancaster. I was able to listen to the system all the way to 222 and up the hill in Adamstown to the very edge of Cocalico twp to the Lebanon county line.
RE: Fire VHF repeaters. Aren't the VHF freqs on the fire side capable of being broadcast over the pagers as well as 160.185? I thought I had heard some West Fire traffic over a county-issued Minitor once.
Sorry would not let me edit. All departments are set up different. This is what I have in mine. 1-alert (vibe), 2-open dispatch (hear all), 3-working chan (west), 4-alert (beep)

That was the reason Chesco set up those VHF repeats of the 800 traffic...so it could be heard via fire pagers.
The same thing is happening in Montco only the County wasn't kind enough to do it for everbody. So, now, you have individual fire companies across Montco grabbing up VHF frequencies to use for 800 traffic rebroadcasts.
that 160.185 signal does sound good here in york. but I would be willing to bet that if york had that kind of signal penetration, the county would STILL find a way to make it sound like it was crappy. york can only dream of keeping a signal that strong.
